I shouldn't have to scan if you're shooting at me...

Raise your hand if you've become "WANTED" because you shot at a ship that was actively attacking you.

The game apparently wants you to sit there and do nothing, while taking fire, until your scan is finished to properly "confirm" that the person is wanted.

I have "Report Crimes Against Me" turned on for this very reason, so the ship is "Wanted" the instant he shoots at me. So why in the name of all that's holy doesn't that instantly display on my ship?

Any hostile ship should be made a valid target the moment it opens fire, no scan needed. As it is, I'm basically out of the game for a week until my bounty expires. So much for "play your way".

As soon as he hits you, you should be good to go, shouldn't you? Is he a terrible shot?

Yes, I've done it, but nope, you're wrong about other things.

Once the attacker actually hits you (not just shoots at you), they will be immediately wanted (unless you are), and as soon as you target them, that will show in the HUD. Blast away to your hearts content.

Report Crimes Against Me has nothing to do with that ship getting wanted, just alerts the authority that someone is getting attacked. They will turn up and scan all ships involved to see who is wanted.

Hostile ships are not the same as ships attacking you. They just don't like you. You can't go around shooting people for that. ;)

Finally, if you've got a persistent bounty for 5 days, it's because you killed the ship before you knew it was wanted. Had you stopped at the assault bounty you'd be clean again in 7 minutes. You also don't have to consider yourself as out of the game as you are only wanted in that one system, and you can still fly there if you don't mind the risk of being interdicted for your bounty. There will even (probably) be a number of stations in that system that won't see you as wanted, you can tell by looking in the system map.

Raise hand, if I am under fire the second the ship goes red it should be attack-able with no penalties.

So go clear your bounty then:-

Sounds like you pledged your allegiance to a power and a ship belonging to a rival faction shoots you in their home turf.

It is sounding like this may be the case. I'll readily admit that this confused me until one of the NPC ships attacked me while announcing that it was because I belonged to a different faction. He wasnt a pirate or "wanted".

Had no idea that supporting a different senator was such an inconvenience  Christ, its like a conservative voter being murdered in an area run by a labour MP - all with the police turning a blind eye.
