I still don't understand Rep...

I just made a mission for Patrons of Law an Empire faction. Killed 7 Devane Coms Inc. Ships. (Independent faction)
So why do I lose rep with the Empire?

I bet you "disrupted" the system stability by a nanocentage. Given that it is under Empire jurisdiction they didn't like it, although the Patrons of Law enjoyed it. Local politics and Galactic politics are not the same. Therefore you rep with local raised and with galactic dropped.

that makes no sense at all. I don't mind the pathetic payout for combat but at least the rep system should be revarding.

If you see a red triangle, it just means that the most recent rep-affecting action that you did hurt your rep. This may be something quite small and insignificant, and doesn't reflect your overall standing with the faction.

Unfortunately, there are big gaps between instances of feedback from the game regarding your progression. You just have to have faith in the system that your hard work will eventually pay off because it eventually does.

The game could do more to let you know that your hard work is getting you somewhere......keep plugging away, and eventually you'll get a promotion or a change in your rep status.

What is hard to understand in "system stability increases, economy goes boom, reputation rises" ?
You helped a "hidden conflict" between two local factions.

Empire does not like conflict.

Rep propagates down and upwards, and from up downwards.

In the end the rep feedback even to the local faction was more negative than positive as you won local rep, and then local rep from empire down to local patron. Overall the result was negative.

That's what galactic factions like the most, stability.

Federation is actually more lenient towards local disputes. You can work with one against the other and many times overall Feds just don't care most of the time.

Empire is more intricate.

Test it out and you will see what I mean.

On the other hand if you get caught with illegal cargo or get bounties and similar the Fed rep drops much more than the Empire one.

I have no idea about Alliance. Can't be bother at the moment with my home system having a civil war between republicans and crimsons :)

Good luck.
