Is this a bug? i did crime and got killed, and woke up in space jail. ok, fair nuff. i taxi back to civilization and lo, i still have a 5k bounty on me - a bounty, not a fine. do i have to pay on the way out of space jail? the only option seems to be to hand myself in, and IM NOT GOING BACK.

Elite used to clear your bounty upon death, or even with time, but now it seems you have to wait until your buy-in at least matches your fees. One day, last year, I went mad and started blowing up any innocent ship at a Nav point, in Shinrarta. I had amassed 347 million CR, just destroying ships--even security and then jumping out and back in. I finally met my end but when I came back I still owed 340-something million. That's when I realized, that the game no longer just "clears the slate," so to speak. You either pay the fees or you are hunted for life.
Can confirm, just went to jail and paid the bounty, but had it after I got back to station.
Relogging works.
