I still have the Alpha in my basket...

I'm about to checkout, but pondering upon the price for a mont of early access (Alpha 4). Don't get me wrong, based on what I've read seems like becoming part of the Alpha is worth it, however this late in the game, and with only a month away for Premium Beta players to have access, I kinda been thinking if at this point I should just wait it off and save my $145 for a Saiktek x52 Pro. I know Alpha backers get 50% ship insurace and a headstart as to anything premium beta backers might get, but I don't know if there would be any significant advantage uprading at this point if I can wait till end of May...

If I were in the same position I would wait. Not really worth it now that we know Premium Beta will begin May 30th IMO. Go with Premium Beta instead...you still get to play around with the Alpha 1.1 build and try out the flight mechanics anyway. :)

Besides, you shouldn't even be able to buy Alpha right now anyway. They really need to fix these kind of issues with the store system right away...

I believe they have extended the alpha period (again) till 9am today.

My hope is that Alpha Commanders doesn't suddenly come picking on P. Beta supporters (in the instanced world) who are just coming to grips with the more complex stuff like landing and opening cargo bays and such. Even I feel I have not optimally mapped out every single important function on my Thrustmaster HOTAS X and I know there are some functions missing in Alpha 1.1 like aforementioned landing gear and cargo bay control.

I really haven't seen that. I am alpha, and I am quite bad at ED combat. It's not my biggest strength anyway (I will only defend myself when attacked). Yeah, we see some share of nagging, testing waters, etc. But overall, alpha players have been nice bunch and mostly I have been attacked if I have done piracy stuff, or playing in opposite teams.

Also remember, we will have all systems to explore, so most likely majority of alpha players will be just running around, making screenshots and videos and making "uhhh", "ahhh" and "have you seen that?!" sounds :D

Nah, it will be fine.

edit: and yeah, I totally agree - go with HOTAS. It is a de facto way of control to fully enjoy game imho.

If you have it put in your basket, take it
It's a hard decision to make and like most people said, Premium Beta's not far off. As much as its tempting to take the last opportunity to do so, it feels like a waste of money for something that I'll eventually get to play in 30 days.

I just took a spin with my Thrustmaster HOTAS X (got it for a measily $30), played Incursion scenario, and did really good with 1 and 2 on one dog fights. Only when there were the set of 4 craft did I get utterly pulverized.

Been thinking of getting a Saitek X52 Pro wih the upgrade-to-Alpha money but I've heard even it and its cheaper cousin X52 had some problems regarding deadzones, disconnection and whatnot. Those seem to be two viable options as the HOTAS Warthog and other solutions seem too bulky and pricey for my tastes.

Not that I thin it's stick or nothing but I like flying with one and as you say, it's not that long until Premium Beta.

Than it is a hard choice. Because usually the are most of the players immediately after the release of a major update. You can get two such updates so far - Alpha 3.4 and Alpha 4 sometime later. And you will be able to enjoy the game all the time. Personally, I am already bored of Alpha 3.4 for quite some time.

HOTAS is actually not the only hardware that you might actually consider. E.g. TrackIR is very useful as well. However all this hardware is not cheap. So with a month left until PB, my priority would be hardware and given I had enough money left I would go for software.

You might consider X55 Rhino. It is more expensive than X52 Pro, however it is cheaper than Warthog.

I'm more invested in an Oculur Rift, but I'm not sure if the use of the device will require far more processing power tan the rig I have now, which runs dandy with everything on HIGH.

Edit: So I hear the Alpha is now gone. I guess that settles that...

Well, you can always tune settings down to get comfortable 60 fps or more, tradeoff I guess is worth it. When I upgraded I bought a system with another e-pci 16x slot just in case I need SLI setup. My guess I will need one for DK2/CV1 of OR running smoothly.

edit: although it is worth to point out that graphics will still go trough lots of optimization, both low and high end settings.

Definitely buy the Alpha!!!

The ship insurance is really worth it.
My cobra only costs me about 3k to replace.....not that I get shot down much

I made this custom setup last year in late Sept and went a little over budget. Got an XFX R7870 Core Edition for a great price. Alas, I did want a fairly compact tower, so my motherboard is only PCI 2.0 and not 3. Still, AMD Quadcore 4.2GH with 8 GB and running almost everything at 60fps on high w/ vsync ain't bad at all. (One of the main reasons I got myself a new PC was to get ready for the new wave of spacesims.)

Edit: But yeah, who knows. Given the optimizations it probably will still run relatively smoothly.

I honestly feels like the ship insurance thing feels a bit like a cheat.

Unfortunately SLI may actually make everything worse due to induced lags (microlags?) whatever they are called. Something like that was discussed on SC forums. So you will probably need the most powerful single GPU you can get and hope that it will provide enough power for OR.

Also I would wait for CV version of OR as it will most probably provide better resolution and other technical properties compared to DK2. Given the fact that DK2 is released this summer, I would not expect CV to be released earlier than in about a year.

There is no big performance difference between PCIE 2.0 and PCIE 3.0. Especially for a single GPU. I guess you may find this review interesting:

Take into account that the difference may also be caused due to two different systems (Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge) being used for these tests.

Part of me wishes the consumer version of the rift has a rendering chip in it so as to offload most of the rendering from the GPU and as such not tax it as much given the need to render two screens at once.

I guess my rig should suffice given the budget I could afford with it. Well, I could always spend $150 on other things non-PC related...

It would introduce another latency case.

As for problems with SLI setup - it really depends on engine. If engine is capable to work within OR settings, it should be able to handle SLI just fine.

My greatest doubts regarding OR is 3D. I cannot stand it, I cannot watch 3D movies or play games with 3D glasses. It makes me feel uncomfortable as soon as I put these glasses on and might cause headaches.

Paying £100 for a months worth of play in a very limited dogfighting scenario - hmmm, is it worth it? Only you can say whether its worth it for you.

But personally I would say even a fantastic full game is not anywhere near worth £100 never mind paying that amount for only a months worth of play. And we dont even know what this game is going to play like yet. It could be rubbish. Just be patient and wait for the full game to come out. There is no need to even buy the Beta, you will regret it when you get fed up with playing the game before its even come out. I think most Alpha backers will be that that point already. They have wasted their first play of the game on an unfinished dogfighting game. The hype is great here but dont get sucked into it. Go play a few other games for six months and come back then.
