i think my Fed progression is -ed

I've been trying to progress my Fed ranking for months new but seem to be stuck on progressing.

Basically over a month ago i suddenly seemed to move forward with an invite to the Exbeur system where some Fed bloke was going to contact me. It gave me the permit to enter the system, so i did, and have now been wandering aimlessly around that system for over a month stopping off at stations, doing the same missions and not being contacted by anyone. Im allied with the Feds and seem to have committed genocide with the number of kills I've been asked to do for them, but nothing.

The worst thing now is if i look at the builiten board ill see the same 'Invite from the feds' mission to go to Exbeur, but now it's listed as an unobtainable mission......

Anyone have any ideas, or am i destined to wander the Exbeur system forever...?

These invite missions are baseless at the moment. You get the permit to enter and that's your lot.

I find that progression only happens by regularly moving Fed systems after each rise in rank. Staying in a single location will end with your opportunities for promotion drying up.

Not completely true. After I got the permit for Sol I made it my home system and have now ranked up to Post Commander entirely through boosting my reputation with Sol factions. So it can be done in one system.

I've been stuck at Lieutenant since Jan - tried missions, warzones, BH - you name it. Made home bases in several Fed systems, raised tickets. . .

Am fed up -

Every single station I visit gives me the same unobtainable permit to Vega - sometimes three of them at a time. I even went to Vega - the station there offered me two more unobtainable permits to - you guessed it - Vega.

What a joke of a system.

Yup same here with the Exbeur system. I have the permit but apparently now the permit is an unobtainable missio, and more than one instance as well! Lo!

I love this game but it is so fundamentally broken in some of the most basic areas sometimes - it's comedy.

I think the problem is that ranking with minor factions isn't shown directly, so all you can do is see whether you get an improvement from completing missions. If you don't, then stop working for that minor faction and start working for another one.

I've been stuck at Ensign for about 2 months now - I have been roving around upping my rep with lots of minor Fed factions, but with no further rank progression....

I'm one rank of post commander. Moving to different systems does seem to help.

I've stopped trying now as PP will either fix or change it all.

People say its not broken but invites to an unlocked system, from that system proves it is.

For me the problem is not the game mechanic its the lack of information on progress. Like with combat ranking. I'm expert on 1400 kills. Some people claim to hit expert at 1200ish.
I understand its possibly relevant to 'quality' of kills, but not seen this officially confirmed.

Again some information would be nice! Perhaps something simple like a tracker bar? I don't need to know exacts what moves the bar along but at least I could see some progress!

Oh undoubtedly the already-obtained-permits being offered under unobtainable missions repeatedly is annoying and something that needs to be fixed. However I did make it to Post Commander. I just kept doing reputation gain missions over and over, and when I felt my reputation was maxed out with two of the factions - Mother Gaia and the Federal Congress - I started working on gaining reputation with the Sol Nationalists, the Sol Worker's Party, and so on. It undoubtedly helps that in Sol there are four or five factions that are all Federation, so I was able to gain rep with five minor Fed factions even staying in Sol.

1.3 will be bringing tracker bars to combat, trading, and exploration ranks, but no word on navy ranks that I know of.

Invites are useless but I keep asking myself why CMDRs have problems with progression. It IS easy and there are several guides in this forum and on YouTube.
Rank up with SEVERAL minor factions through missions that say "rank progression", request money, food, medicine or weapons IIRC. Kill missions also help but they are a bit buggy atm.
Never abandon a mission or kill ships from your factions EVEN if they are wanted. Quite realistic when you think about it.

The reason we have problems is because we have no idea what we're doing, and I don't mean that we can't figure out that we should do missions.

I'm at Warrant Officer with Federation and cannot seem to get further. At this point I can't even find a Federation system that I'm not allied with, and the Ross 128 permit invite is all I keep getting offered. In the middle, I ranked up very quickly and in fact have several permits that I never even accepted a mission to receive. I have no idea if I need to visit these systems or not(I think I have, but frankly there is no way to tell because 1500 years from now we'll have less data tracking ability than Facebook offers right now, apparently) There have been millions in federal bounties claimed and who knows how many missions done, and I have no idea if I'm one mission from getting the bump or if I have made no progress whatsoever or if I've actually gone backward by participating in the Empire CG's.

The problem is that on the right panel you will be always shown "allied" with minor factions if you're allied with the major faction.
That's a bug afaik.
I THINK your real standing is shown when you go to the system map and click on the station.

I am not sure though ... I just ranked up "unwillingly" because I like doing bulletin missions while wandering a bit.

It's a false positive. They tweaked the settings recently so that you became Allied with a big faction much quicker (I know because I barely did anything for the Empire or the Alliance and suddenly after just a couple of missions I became "Allied" with them when I hadn't even been Friendly before, and this was after spending weeks grinding in the Federation and still being only Friendly). When I suddenly appeared as Allied with the Alliance and Empire, for which I'd barely done anything, I showed up as Allied with their minor factions too... but my suspicion is I'm not really and it's being overwritten by my Allied status with the main faction as a whole.

You don't need to visit the systems you get permits for, despite the text saying you should get over there.

The rank progression missions spawn on two requirements - firstly that your reputation is high enough with one or several local minor factions, secondly a random number generator. So first the game checks to see if your reputation threshold is high enough, and then it spins a random generator to see if a mission will come up on the bulletin board of that station you've logged in to or just docked at. Sometimes it's just not your day, but if you're uncertain, keep pushing your reputation up with the minor factions because it might be that you haven't met the threshold.

^^this.
Even trading, handing in bounty vouchers and exploration data helps, but you need good amounts.

What's a good amount?

I've handed in at least 70 mil in Fed bounties (plus ~20 mil Combat bonds and around 10 mil in exploration data) and doesn't seem to have helped.

Edit - anyway - thanks for discussion - will try a few more missions.

Whoa, I can't tell numbers but when I handed in 1.5 million in bounty I jumped to allied with a minor faction. Don't forget you have to spread your work over several (no numbers sorry) minor factions.

Best you search for this (elite dangerous rank) on YouTube. I am mobile atm.

But this will be probably totally overdue with 1.3 coming in a few days.
