I think the Nigersaurus could do with a downscale

Hey everyone 👋

Before getting into this thread, I wanted to bring up something I was thinking of while working on this suggestion:

Almost 3 years ago, before writing this thread on a cretaceous sauropod resize request, I made a thread requesting another cretaceous sauropod to have it be resized, the dreadnoughtus. I enjoyed that thread as it was fun doing the research and photoshopping the images there, plus it was awesome to get feedback and insight from the members of this community.

What was amazing was to see the dreadnoughtus did get that upscale in size in JWE2, and I want to thank the developers taking the request into consideration, and the community for sharing their voice in the matter. I hope that the information supplied in that thread was useful when making the upscale 🌟

With that said, here is a thread request for the nigersaurus, not to get bigger but smaller. 🦕

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of my favorite improvements in JWE2 was the TLC the JWE roster of dinosaurs got when brought over to the sequel. Some had their models updated to better represent their movie counterparts, multiple skin options for vibrant variation, and most notable were the changes in size.

Most dinosaurs were oversized back in JWE1, and it did hinder the variation between species as size is a factor to a dinosaur's appeal. Now dinosaurs like the crichtonsaurus, chasmosaurus, chungkingosaurus, and dreadnoughtus were given size alterations to better fit their real life counterparts, and it genuinely enhanced the experience for a lot of the players in the JWE community.

Yet, I did note that the nigersaurus looked to be unaltered since JWE1, which was strange.

Nigersaurus was one of the dinosaurs I was looking forward to be given a downscale, as I did find it odd how large it was back in JWE, but didn't mind it's oversized length back then because a lot of dinosaurs were rather oversized back then, and that it was technically the smallest sauropod in that game.

Still, I had hopes of seeing it being downscaled in the sequel, for it was roughly 50% larger than the scale shared in the Database back then at 14 meters, 5 meters more than her real life estimates.

When JWE2 was announced to be introducing the amargasaurus, I initially thought that the new dinosaur was going to be similar in size to the JWE nigersaurus, 14 meters in length which was pretty big, but after seeing it come out of the enclosure, it looked to be a rather small sauropod! And it was an eye opener and a teaser that we could see the small dinosaurs of JWE be downscaled to their scientific estimates.

Now after JWE2's release, we did get to see the new small sauropod and it was a delight to have it in the park, and with how some of the other dinosaurs also got a resize in the new game, I was looking forward to unlock the nigersaurus and see her at 9 meters. To which I was surprised to find out that not only has it not been shrunk down like other oversized dinosaurs, but was given an update in the database listing it at 14 meters in length.

This was something that bummed me a bit, but I did want to look into it more before bringing it up here on the forums. This could be because both the Nigersaurus and Amargasaurus were so similar in size that they hindered each other's appeal, so keeping her large was to help it stand out from her spikey cousin. Yet the database and Dr. Wu's commentary would bring up her small size as a distinctive feature, and knowing how small the species was in real life estimates at 9 meters, and how JWE1 labeled her as a 9 meter dinosaur, I wanted to bring this up and see if we could get the nigersaurus downsized. Especially since the Amargasaurus was a sauropod that was thought to have been between 9-10 meters in real life, and having it stand by the nigersaurus showcases the large size gap between the two.

Scaling down the nigersaurus

Not too long ago, a reddit user shared a link to size charts of the dinosaurs next to each other:

One chart I was happy to find were the sauropods showcased together.

This image showcases all of the different sauropod models used in the game. As seen, the sauropods are appropriately sized to their movie and RL estimates respectively. The only one I find off is the nigersaurus, especially when compared to the amargasaurus in front of it.

With the base models and sizes of the dinosaurs showcased in the picture, I made silhouettes of the small sauropods in order to measure their sizes and estimate a good size for the downscaled nigersaurus, and see if it would be feasible.

One thing I noticed is that the Amargasaurus is actually 10.0m instead of 9.5m, making it a tad longer than the database, but real life estimates were suggested to be between 9-10 meters.

When shrinking the nigersaurus, I went with the 9 meter length the original database shared in JWE1, you could see it as the green silhouette above. There is a notable change in scale, removing about 5 meters in length and a meter in height. When compared to the amargasaurus, it looks to be smaller than the spikey sauropod, as the amargasaurus has a more vertical look thanks to her neck vertebrae.

This downscaled versions is what I thought we would be getting in JWE2, and I think it could work. Despite there being a meter difference in length, the two sauropods are very different in appearance. The nigersaurus has a vacuum like mouth and round body, while the amargasaurus has a horse like head and spiky neck and back adornments. And when Dr.Wu or the game would comment on the small size of the nigersaurus, I could definitely see that distinction better with the 9 meter length than her current 14 meter one.

----------------------------

This was something I wanted to bring up as soon as possible, as making a resize edit early on in the game's life would be easier than implementing it later down the line, but I wanted to get some data first before making the request. There are a few animals in the game that are oversized like the attenborosaurus (6.5 meters instead of 5), and the qianzhousaurus (9.9 meters instead of 6-7), but it is the nigersaurus that does stand out to me in terms of scale, especially since the game would highlight it's otherwise small scale when released from the hatchery.

Plenty of dinosaurs did get downscaled in JWE2, and I am hoping a similar treatment could be done with the nigersaurus to better reflect her small size. A lot of dinosaurs I didn't use as much in JWE1 are now more appealing thanks to their resizes that represents their movie or RL counterparts, and I think the Nigersaurus could get some TLC in that area as well.

But what do you think in terms of scale? Should the nigersaurus be downscaled or should she remain as is? Do let us know down below and share your thoughts.

Thank you all for reading my suggestion, take care 👋

After commenting on my previous post that there were only a handful of animals I thought were oddly sized besides the nigersaurus, I ended up getting motivated to look over the roster and see if there is anything that sticks out. And I am amazed to say that I only ever found 2 other animals besides the nigersaurus that were oddly sized, an aquatic reptile and the Jurassic Park III Pteranodon variant.

One dinosaur I thought was oversized was the qianzhousaurus. It was a dinosaur I did quick searches of and often found that the species was stated to be around 5-7 depending on the subspecies. Unless you look into qianzhousaurus sinensis, a subspecies that could actually reach 9 meters in length. It was very evident in articles in 2014 such as the one published by National Geographic under the name, "Pinocchio Rex" Found; Dinosaur Sported Long Snout.

It was a pleasant surprise to learn this and I take back what I said regarding the qianzhousaurus being larger than her real life counterpart.

And this was something I kept discovering when going over the animals in the game. For example, I always thought the elasmosaurus was around 14 meters as I often searched the "Longest plesiosaur", only to learn that it was 10.3 meters with other species having a longer body length like Albertonectes or Thalassomedon that have body lengths reaching 11.6 meters.

Another discovery was when looking into Sauropelta, it was odd to see its 7.6 meters when searches would have it between 5 and 6 meters, but I stumbled on this youtube podcast video from I know Dino that talks about the sauropelta, and started off by sharing the growth in estimated sizes the sauropelta has:

So I ended up learning a lot from doing this little research. It was a lot of fun, but more importantly, it showed how dedicated the Jurassic World Evolution team are in looking at animal sizes, as the majority of dinosaurs and reptiles I looked into had sizes that were very respectable to the movie and real world estimates.

So, alongside the nigersaurus, do look at these other 2 animals that could do with some tweaks in regards to their size.

Attenborosaurus
Rescale Side-05.png

Now I had a harder time finding anything that relates to her being 6.5 meters. The attenborosaurus, from what I have gathered, would reach a maximum size of 5 meters, and if there is any documentation on the 6.5 meter length, then please do share!

The only reason I think the attenborosaurus was 6.5 instead of 5 was probably to balance out the roster of aquatics by adding another medium marine reptile, while also differentiating it from the plesiosaurus. I do think it could work with a downsize to 5 meters, as it is still fairly larger than the plesiosaurus, and has a unique look to it when compared to the snake like appearance of the plesiosaurus.

Jurassic Park Pteranodons
Rescale Side-06.png

The most recent addition was one of the oddest ones yet. As players have noted, the JPIII pteranodon looks considerably smaller than her Jurassic Park depiction. Especially during the aviary segment in the movie, where the pterosaurs practically dwarf the cast of characters.

When looking into the sizes, I did stumble on this pterosaur chart on twitter, where the artist took the pterosaurs of Jurassic Park and placed them next to each other when archiving their sizes.

I was able to speak to Lucca behind the chart and ask for sources regarding the pteranodon sizes. From what I have gathered, the Jurassic World and Jurassic Park pterosaur sizes were based on promotional material [here], charts from the JPIII DVD bonus feature [here], and an estimate based on The Lost World animatronic that was life sized in construction [here].

So from there, I included the JPIII and TLW Pteranodon sizes, and for the most part it looks to be fairly sized to fit the JP brand pterosaurs. The JPIII version is fairly large at 9.7 meters, and would be larger than the Jurassic World version at 7.3 meters. It would make the JP III pterosaur the largest version amongst the current roster, where the Tropeognathus has a wingspan of roughly 8.5 meters. Though it is massive, I think it would be wonderful to have it at such a size, as it's imposing scale was one of the notable features of the Jurassic Park III Pteranodon.

The Lost World Version would be unique if done around the size of 7.6 meters, because even though it would be .3 meters wider than the Jurassic World pteranodon, its skull shape and anatomy is smaller looking when compared to the JW version. Maybe TLW pteranodon could have had a wingspan of 5.7 meters, as the JPIII skin when introduced was not only smaller, but also had to be unlocked via TLW chaos theory, so the small size may have been intended for TLW skin.

It would be interesting to see what the Lost World pterosaur would look like once it is in the game that is for sure.

Edit 15th September 2022.

The JP III Pteranodon has been updated to a larger scale!

-------------------

All in all, this was such an awesome small project to work on. Not only to see how animal sizes were handled in JWE2, but also learning about the potential animal sizes in reality, as well as being exposed to the glorious TLW JP gallery of animatronics and puppets.

With that said, I do hope the team at frontier could take the request to resize the nigersaurus, attenborosaurus, and JPIII pteranodon into consideration. It would be the one last polish for the roster to be golden in terms of size accuracy.

Than you all for reading 👋

Edit: I updated the link for the Jurassic World pteranodon promotional material, as it didn’t show a working image.

There's no evidence of an extra legacy skin for Pteranodon in the game files. I think the devs genuinely believed that the Pteranodon had the same design in TLW and JP3. I also don't think we'll be getting a '97 Pteranodon, as it only appeared for a good 2 minutes at the very end of the film. I'm pretty sure Mamenchisaurus/"Seismosaurus" has more screentime, and there's still no legacy skin for that species.

While I see your points, the same could be said for the 1993 young gallimimus skin. We only ever see it for a few seconds, and it barley was that visible during the screen time, Yet the attention detail to include it in the game is impressive!

And from a legacy skin perspective, both mamenchisaurus and pteranodon (TLW) are the only Pre-Jurassic World animals that lack a legacy skin, and are often brought up in request to see their inclusions. Though they do not have files currently in the game (I can't check as I do not have such access), I think it would be cool if they get implemented later down the line and complete the legacy dinosaur skins JWE2 could deliver.

Very much agree about Nigersaurus getting a substantial downsize.

Another that's bothered me alot since the release of JWE2 is Ankylosaurus:

JWE1 - 7.9 meters (good!)

JP3 size chart - not a big fan of this size chart so I treat it as something like a third party extra, but the 8.5 meters length for Anky there is alot better than what's going on with the JWE2 Anky.

JWE2 - Anky has now mysteriously been blown up to a noticeably huge 9.3 meters length (no good).

So, ideally, JWE2 Anky could do with losing about a meter off its current size, imo - I blame the way oversized large carnivores for this because of the battle physics (the JWE2 T.rex got roids and is currently 14.5 meters in-game size, which makes it even bigger than it was prior to the 2018 size fix). One step forward, two steps back.

Hey everyone!

I hope you are having a grand last week of 2023 before the new year comes around!

I am really happy to see how Frontier has made edits for their base game dinosaurs over the years, such as the updated eyes for the JPIII raptors, the revamped spinosaurus animation, the conversion of some retro skins to full variants, and the aforementioned Pteranodon upsize to name a few. All of these have really helped update some of the base game dinosaurs to make them more appealing, and I still hope that such great attention could be applied to shrink down the Nigersaurus to 9 meters instead of the current 14 meter size.

Admittedly, with each new update I would check out the Nigersaurus in the species viewer to seeif it ever got a downscale in size incase it was patched in without mention. Having the Nigersaurus 50% bigger than what it should be removes what makes this animal special, as aside from the wide mouth with 500 teeth, this sauropod is known to be considerably small.

I would love it if the Nigersaurus could get a resize, it would make for a great small sauropod to be housed with the Ouranosaurus and other herbivoresin the game, and a nice alternative to the Amargasaurus and her spiny display. I would be over the moon if the Nigersaurus get updated to be appropriately small 🙏
