I think there is a problem with faction influence

So, I base out of Yakabugai because the ruling party is the awesomely-named Quantum Whales of Yakabugai. Lately, their influence in the system has been dropping, so I've been doing big influence missions to try to boost them up. Yet despite my best efforts, after days of work, it continues to drop at a worrying rate. Mission reward screen shows me getting credits, a pip in reputation, then nothing in influence when it said I should be getting 5 pips in influence. I've done everything from data courier to shipping for outbreaks and booms to huge massacre missions (ty Federal Corvette!). No noticeable results. I can't even tell if my progress is being recorded.

Am I doing this wrong, like should I be boosting them in a different way? Do I need to help them with their wars in other systems or kill one of the factions (which has been done before here and another faction is in retreat right now)? Or is this a futile endeavor beyond my control and I should simply savor this beautiful moment of being ruled by this well-named theocracy?

That IS a cool faction name.

The systems is a modestly populous one and doesn't appear to have a lot of traffic so one would think that it should be straightforward to support a faction however the BGS always amazes me in its lack of anything that could be characterized by the word straightforward.
Looking at states of factions in the system, I don't see one in retreat, but I'll not worry about it...

That said, you appear to be doing what's needed, that is to say you're running missions for INF. What's difficult to assess is how much traffic is applying a counter- or other-benefit to your faction or the others in the system. You can gain some clues about that by studying details of the traffic report for the system but it's a bit opaque unless you're fairly certain of what traffic you and player-mates represent.

One suggestion I could make is to GET HELP. This is a player faction. Maybe it's time to call in the players and apply a bigger lever to the system with collective action to see what effect that produces. (Good luck with that; I know it can be tough.)

Appying effort to the faction in another system where it has a presence won't really help here, as far as I know.

I'm not a BGS expert. Another suggestion I could offer is to post your query on the BGS forum where many BGS-ers see posts such as this!

Yakabugai System faction states 2021-06-19-1916UTC.jpg

from Inara, 2021-06-19, 19:16UTC
the Tick has been 2+ hours later than recent history for the last week now so this info won't yet represent effort exerted in the last day.

Edit:
Tick for the 19th occurred later, at 22:21UTC!
The "tick" has been weird of late. One thing that I've noticed in the systems that I follow is that, even though the tick occurs, it seems that faction states aren't updated, sometimes for hours. I don't know what's going on. This is the first time that I have experienced this behavior. It may also be Inara; I'd need another BGS tool to help me make that determination.

Edit 2:
Silly me. It's entirely possible that the behavior is due to the fact that system info hasn't been reported to the EDDN yet. This happens commonly. If players chose to use tools such as EDMC, system info and market prices, etc. get updated when they visit systems.

That is incredibly helpful information! Glad at least I'm on the right track. Last I'd checked about the faction in retreat, I remember it was some kind of gang, but I on second investigation I might be thinking of one of the neighboring systems, but also looking at Inara again I'm finding they switched it up a bit as it used to display factions there once before but with a line through the name.

Definitely going to keep up the pace, then. I can bring a friend in once we get past the Odyssey Crash Issues™. There's money in them there massacre missions. Thank you for your help, Esteban!

Thank you for those kind words!
Good luck; many of us hope that the OCIs™ are resolved very soon! I am still playing exclusively in Horizons.

Just a few observations that I made when visiting the system today (I had a little time in between my tasks not far away).

There is indeed money to be made in massacre missions as you say, but be aware that piling on a huge amount of the same mission types isn't as effective as piling on a variety of different tasks such as those massacre missions, commodity sales (for profit, not loss), black box and salvage missions, deliveries, courier jobs, cashing-in exploration data, redeeming combat bounties, etc. Variety is the spice of life and is also the way to go for BGS impact.

After today's Tick and when the system updated, I noticed that the Quantum Whales' INF fell again (from 46.4% to 45.2%).
I did a bunch of courier jobs, hits, deliveries, etc., and became allied and contributed some tens of INF to today's tally for the Quantum Whales (perhaps 30). Maybe it will help...

Activities all reach a level of diminishing returns as you pile them on. Details for most of these (when / how much) are outside the scope of my BGS knowledge, however I do know that approx 100 million credits worth of cartographic data handed-in (per day) is where you reach that point of diminishing returns (for carto-data). This is the cumulative value of all CMDRs' contributions.

The Yakabugai System doesn't currently have any places to earn significant bounties from combat. If another system where they have control does, you can earn them in that other system and then bring them to the Yakabugai System and redeem them at the port where the Quantum Whales are in control. You can earn bounties in combat at CNBs & RESs.* This is an example of a situation where benefits are portable.

There are currently five fleet carriers in this small system. Depending upon their activities, they could have a huge amount of leverage on the faction-states in this system- easily far more than one or two CMDRs could hope to overcome. Perhaps you know or are affiliated with one or more of them and can find out...

Selling commodities to the black market in a port negatively impacts the controlling faction's INF. This isn't applicable at Serebrov (because it's shut down there), but it's something to be aware of.
This also means that you could sell black-market goods to cause another faction's INF to fall. Before you attempt this, please get clarification from a BGS-person to determine if you can do this by simply selling at the black market in another port that is controlled by a different faction (within the system, of course). I'm not entirely certain, but I believe that's all there is to it.

Redeeming bounties for other factions at any port in this system hurts the Quantum Whales' INF, so this is to be avoided.
Trading goods (profitably) or cashing-in cartography data at stations (in this system) that are not controlled by the Quantum Whales benefits those other factions, so this is to be avoided.

Random traffic (other un-interested players passing thru) and their missions / trade activity all counts too. This can make it really difficult to have a grasp on what's happening in busy systems, not to mention moving the faction states in a desired direction.

It remains to be learned what would happen to the Quantum Whales' INF and position if things were simply let go the way they may. I certainly understand if you don't want to learn that, of course.
This is a native faction, so it cannot retreat from the system. Its place is secure at least in that way.

Yea! I guess it just keeps a tally of influence gains and losses, then applies them all at some point, gonna guess weekly? But your data helped a lot with what to do to help this faction. I think the massacre missions are more about eradicating neighboring factions, generally the more criminal/pirate ones that are dying anyway, than they are about boosting influence in Yakabugai. Switched to trade missions as there are some for helping an outbreak in Kremainn, super easy with a T9 hauler.

I think another problem might have been that there were elections going on with some factions and some wars with the QW in other systems, so there may be a bunch of BGS stuff going on that made influence effects unrecognizable. Soon as it ended, I started seeing them jump up again. Can't claim I know anything about BGS or how most of the mechanics behind influence works, but it feels good to know that I can help it somehow.

There's a daily server-tick that applies all efforts to all systems and their factions. Some other BGS parameters take several days to play out.

If you've done, let's say, 30-INF for one faction's interests but someone else did more to achieve a different goal, the faction loses influence (being super-simplistic). There are a number of good BGS tutorials online (even ones that just cover the basics) and some threads here on the BGS forum that discuss the current understanding of this complex thing called the BGS. I have learned a little as I have participated and I have definitely stood on the shoulders of others when helping achieve a common goal (the Dark Wheel player-initiative in particular).

It's generally a good strategy to do things that you enjoy, that you're good at / well-equipped to do. I try to do that because, frankly, sometimes you exert a lot of effort and INF still doesn't go 'your' way. But, you can - and do - have an impact.

When I was looking at the Quantum Whale's INF over time, I noticed that their INF has moved up and down; falling as low as approx 39% back in April, from approx 56% in Feb. (See the INF graph on Inara:
I don't know how long you've been trying to move/maintain their INF, but you can see the INF ups and downs, along with other factions'.

My feeling from some experience is that things going on in other systems are rather detached from what can happen in the system you're concentrating on. I used the word "can" because there may be some interaction due to the distraction of effort (perhaps) for the faction when it's now exerted in a different system. This is but one of likely numerous reasons because much of what's going on even in-system tends to be invisible to us. Good luck!

...and another step up! 49.5%. Now that you're in control (yeah, right!), be aware that in order to avoid an unwanted expansion, you'll want to keep the faction's INF under 70%. Good luck, BGS whiz!
Seriously, just have fun!

you might find it useful to follow the threads about anarchy, the tick, the BGS

you will see that the BGS is very damaged. and the threads on those topics will tell you why.
