I think this is possibly my favourite game of recent years.

I didn't play Elite. I didn't play Frontier or Encounters. December 16th was the first time I ever played an Elite game. I've played every day since. I know there are some bugs, I've been bitten by some of them. I understand that this is a project that maybe was released a bit too early and maybe shouldn't have been. Doesn't really matter. Some of the mechanics inherent within the game stop me from flying in the X-Wing style that I'm accustomed to. Doesn't really matter, I relearned.

I've crashed ships because I didn't know what I was doing. I've had to start from a Sidewinder again because I flew into a space station shortly after thinking I'd nailed the controls. I can't count how many times I've been dumped out of SC because I got too close to a star scooping fuel. Doesn't matter, I learned how to do things better each time afterwards. I've been shot all to hell by NPCs because I suck at combat and my guns ran too hot or stopped working. Doesn't matter, I learned a lesson or two.

Just posting as one of those largely silent majority you hear about. We're still here, plugging away quietly. That's all really, I expect this'll drop off the front page pretty quickly with all the blooblooing going on.

+1 and I hear ya pal. Its a great game, even with its issues that rears up to its cahoonies. The great thing about it all is, over time, it will only get better.

It definitely did get released before it was ready, but market forces / economics / yada yada. It's done, its getting fixed, and gamers like me who waited for Elite 4 for a decade thru all the rumours, and false dawns, are just glad we have what we have in all its wonderful Eliteness. I'm especially glad when I hear new players to Elite are getting in on why we love it.

Some just don't understand it, what it is, what it is not and why Elite is the way it is, and that's fine, we are all on different waves in the sea.

Yeah.
I've played the original game for months.
Just a bunch of wireframes, but my imagination went wild.
-
E : D is bringing back all those memories.
Only this time, it's huge and in full color.
A little rough around the edges though.

I played the original, so I'm aware of the Elite legacy. Most recently, I came directly from The Secret World, which is arguably the most lovingly crafted and immersive MMORPG ever created. Yet Elite: Dangerous holds my attention, and I enjoy it immensely.
.
It's not yet what it will be, but I believe even the critics are gradually starting to see how much the development team are willing to put into the game, given half the chance.

I loved Elite. I had it on the BBC B, I had it on the Sinclair Spectrum, I had Elite plus on the Amiga and now have ED. I love Elite. You give me the keys to my spaceship and the galaxy with no manual, no advice, with endless possibilities. Only this time it looks good. It sounds great. I don't have to be stuck in the cobra ( I need the fer de lance lol hurry up devs). I loved it then, I love it now. Ok, yo need to cross a few t's and dot a few i's, yeah I cant just hit the Taurus jump drive and get to the station or into the action, yeah the cost of learning the hard way can be brutal ( have already lost an 18mil asp and busted back to sidey) but hey. Its the finest escapism there is. The game is what you make it, make it a grind and guess what? I have my own little flotilla going. A viper for kicking ass a type 6 for trading and my adder explorer. When one gets stale we light up another and change tacks, These three cost less than an the asp I had (18mil or the asp these 3 clock in at 15) and surprisingly are much more fun than the bloated lawnmower sounding space bus. Building a well equipped fleet also gives easy short term tangible goals as you outfit our new craft bit by bit, rather than trying to grind £15mil in one sitting.

At the end of the day, its not for everyone.

I agree with the sentiment that a Newtonian flight model is no fun and makes it too awkward to fly. Gladly, FD decided against it :)

Same here. Most people enjoying the game aren't spending time on forums. The only reason I am here is because of all the recent updates rolling around. Trying to keep up with changes.

R+ OP.....yes I agree, Frontier really hit a home run with ED....it's been an obsession since I bought it around the first of the year. The really sweet thing is that it's looking like things will only get better as more is added to the game

I approve of this.

I love this game and play it every day. It's well thought out, well written and well executed. It does what it says on the tin. I did play the originals and this is their most awesome successor. I am an ex-Eve online pilot and this IS the game I was looking for not Eve which has dreadful physics and awful combat.

I deplore all the moaning and whining and waaaaaaah threads.

Well done Frontier Developments, you have made a game I truly enjoy (and I'm a fussy gamer, I don't play any old rubbish).

Many, many people are playing and enjoying ED but are not posting in these forums (I know of many who won't post due to the negativity and general bad feeling from a lot of posters)
Personally I haven't played a game as much as this for quite a while and I played the original Elite just as much :)

+rep to everyone who uses the Oculus.. I got mine a week and a bit ago and its simply a Game Changer.. Sure its still in development and needs a better screen on it (its like sitting too close to an old CRT TV) but the immersion.. my god.. going to the outfitter in my Python and standing on the pad, with the nose of the python towering 2 stories over my head.. having to ACTUALLY look up at the roof of my condo, in order to see the nose of the ship... then sitting inside it.. theres simply no way to explain it to someone who hasnt put a set of goggles on and done it.. I mean.. down to the "frost" on the glass of the cockpit.. you just want to take a rag and wipe the windshield down infront of you.. its not just amazing, its simply Awe-Inspiring and makes me want the CV1 model even more..

Looking back behind the seat of any ship is awesome.. you dont just "see a door" there you literally feel like the door is 15 feet behind you and you just want to walk over to it and see whe rest of the ship!

Cant recommend it enough.. I thought it would be something I would use once and a while.. now.. its simply something i cant play without

I played elite, frontier and FF2 back in the day (yep makes me a tad old now) and all I can say is welcome to the fold. IMO all that is missing from this game is a few more and different missions to do and it will be much closer to feeling finished. Yep planetary landing would be nice as would getting out of our ship, but in all honestly they have nailed the core game philosophy that we had in the originals.

Once it it becomes more polished I am quite sure this will also become my favorite in the franchise. Welcome aboard Commander!

I wanted the sense of traveling in the real galaxy and this game gives me that in spades. I don't care for PVP nor the idea of as an individual, being able to affect world events or be a hero. I'm neither the Dragonborn nor Martin Luther King.

ED is just what I wanted. The idea of being alone, in space, and sometimes carting some stuff about.

Oh, and you can't "win" in this game, so it is much like real life :)

Good positive thread.
