I understand an Anaconda is great and all but...

So i have had the beta all but 3 days and im still quite clueless on a lot of the mechanics of this game, which is great. I LOVE the learning curve of this game, there is just so much to it! i figure out something new every time i log in :). over the past 3 days ive been squeezing in as much play time as possible (work full time + a part time student and was recently married lol). Im still stuck with the sidewinder, just running trade routes to make a few creds while i get the hang of things. Ive outfitted it with 2 auto cannons, i think the basic ones with 2190 rounds of ammo. Anyways, i felt i had to write my first comment on the forums (which ive been stalking religiously over the past 2 months) about what just happened not even 5 minutes ago.

So i had just left FreePort selling some "stolen" goods i found floating around. Making a pitiful 2,000 creds i undock and head out of the station wanting to go dock at another station to accept a lawful trading job (im a good guy). I jump into SC and begin to lock onto Eranin to begin a hyper jump, when all of a sudden i am being interdicted. Looking for a fight, i obviously avoid the escape vector and am blasted in a whirling chaotic spin back into normal space. I immediately arm my auto cannons and spool down the engines so i can quickly engage the possible threat. All of a sudden i am being engaged by a wanted Anaconda and before i know it my shields are blown away and i see a "incoming missile" warning (this happened in about 5 seconds). The missile strikes my hull with a thunderous BOOM and my hull is brought down to 82%. The wanted criminal comes into view and hes barreling towards me, so fast that i cannot avoid a direct hit. Quickly, without thinking, i say ...... it! I direct all power to my weapon systems, spool up the engines and fly directly at him. We collide, my hull drops to 61% and somehow we are stuck together in an uncontrollable spin. Luckily my cannons are pointed at his belly and he is completely defenseless in this position.

I unload on him with everything i had. sparks flying, i take down his shields in 2 reloads. slowly his hull was chipping away under the volley of projectiles. Still our ships were twisted against each other flying into oblivion, but i still kept on firing. 82%, 73% 61% his hull dropped all the way down to 10% as i watched my ammo counter dry up. i now had only 300 rounds left on both cannons. Crossing my fingers i kept on firing, knowing that if i let him break free i wouldn't stand a chance, i had to win, I HAD TO!

Before i knew it i was black on ammo with his hull remaining at 5%, there was nothing left to do but attempt to break free and jump away. I broke away, stowed my spent smoking cannons and started spooling up SC. Lasers were heating up my back side, causing the drivers to slow their charge, sitting on the edge of my seat praying they would charge in time, i see an *incoming missile* alert. i sat back in my chair in disbelief. My little sidewinder takes a direct hit, my dash is smoking and sparking, the windshield is blown out and my HUD dies. seconds later i explode.

I understand the Anaconda is a fierce opponent, the only reason i attempted to fight it was because of the obvious glitch causing our ships to cling together, but REALLY?!? over 2000 rounds from 2 auto cannons couldn't even down it! that's with every round making contact! Just thought i would share my story, even though i got my butt kicked, it was a blast, and i have many lessons to learn in this amazing immersive game. And by the way, my wife saw the whole thing, hurting my pride just a a little haha.

Thanks for listening guys! good luck out there Commanders!

That was a great read, well written.

I have to agree with the design decisions though. The Anaconda is as good as it can get as far as combat ships go and as such it's incredibly powerful and can take a lot of punishment. You should be hard pressed to destroy one with only two multicannons at your disposal.

In a regular fight if you're forced to fight one with your Sidewinder (and not caught up in a hull tangle as you were) you would have a much higher chance of winning by using stealth and destroying key subsystems. My first Anaconda takedown in Beta 3 was in my Eagle where I used my three multicannons to slowly chip away at his shields while avoiding his fire using my far superior maneuverability. Once his shields were down I was able to destroy him by disabling his thrusters and then destroying his power plant. In my single Eagle alone I would have run out of ammunition if I'd fought him on his terms, that is, head on.

You can shoot your 45 at a M1 Abrams all day long... and it ain't gonna fall.

Somethings should be impossible to take down with an entry level kit.

Thanks for the quick replies! How exactly do I target specific parts of a ship? Are gimmbled (spelled it wrong) weapons worse because they target the midsection only? And Good comparison of the 45 vs the Abrams haha, never looked at it that way.

Tanks have been killed with pistols before. Take out the Driver or Commander's prism, he has to pop the hatch to see. Then you pop him.

If you look at your left panel you'll see a section for "sub targets" those are what you're looking for. There is also a set of key bindings that control this as well so you don't need to rely on switching over to your left panel whenever you want to target a sub system.

Gimballed weapons will target the ships center of mass if you don't have a subsystem targeted, which isn't a bad thing as it's the largest area of the ship and allows for the best accuracy. Once you've targeted a specific subsystem a gimballed weapon will auto target onto it instead which makes them much more suitable for destroying subsystems than fixed weapons, unless you're a skilled pilot.

Thanks for the info! I will surely practice on targeting subsystems. And yeah, I know I have no right to complain, but still, I got soooo close Haha. Voice attack is going to be a must buy for me, I put off getting it because I don't have a pay-pal account. Originally I was gong to opt for the x55 but I just got married so I can't afford to spend that much on a peripheral, so I just got an xbox one controller. It's actually not that bad.

Congratulations on marriage - but if you are going to play with an XB1 controller on a PC, you may want to send it back for a 360 wireless version.

It can only be used wired, and the USB connector and cable are seriously rubbish. Just looking at it wrong can cause bad connections.

Turn that .45 on the GPS*, or the TC and you did something serious to that tank. Would be more interesting for there to be some kind of thermal exhaust port (did I make a Star Wars reference?). Doesn't even need to kill it, but just significantly reduce the advantage it does have. Of course it shouldn't be easy to achieve, just like getting up close to a tank at wartime (to stick with the example), but just possible enough to be worth trying if you made a wrong move in your Sidewinder.

Yeah, when I bought it I thought it would connect via Bluetooth but boy was I wrong. It all works out though, my keyboard sits in my lap (sit on the couch in front of the 70inch) and I have a spare USB port on it used for the controller. No connection issues yet but they may arise in the future.

And thanks for the congrats! Happier than ever :)

I use an X55 and I've also been considering buying voice attack if only for use with power distribution settings. It's not a problem for me to switch them on the fly but seeing people switch them instantly with just voice commands makes it very tempting.

Planning on buying voice attack tonight after work but not looking forward to the tedious task of mapping each command, I'm sure it will be worth it though.

There are existing profiles out there, some very extensive. Highly personalized of course, but nothing a text editor can't fix :D

I'll have to do some poking around the interwebs to find one then! I'm really trying to sell the wife on the game, last night while she watched me play elite, it sparked an hour long conversation about space and the vastness of it. It was great :D. If only I can peel her away from guild wars 2 and into elite...

Honestly, I wouldn't mind there being an Armour Hardness factor involved. I'm not sure a small caliber multi-cannon should be even technically capable of destroying an Anaconda. You should be able to damage it's engines, it's hard points etc etc, but there should be essentially no way to get at it's reactor and blow it up. The hull integrity % is an abomination and needs to disappear.
