I wanna build me a space station

A Dodec space station.
I then want to go to my local cinema and get them to agree to a 25% discount for all Elite Players.
I then have a panel editor for one of the 20 sides of my space station -- I set a code to rotate every week with a diff code.

I give the cinema a big poster with a backdrop from Elite -- and 'get the code from system X for a 25% discount on all tickets in June' printed on.

So the advertising is not in the game, rather it's in the shop..

Who wins?
i) Me -- I get commission for all the new customers brought in
ii) Elite -- advertising in local shops --- brings in new subscribers
iii) Local shops -- brings in new customers
iv) New commanders -- introduction to a great new game and some discounts on local products

Who loses?
-- no doubt there will be lots of people about to tell me why this idea sucks  <-- keep it friendly space dudes...

@NeilRoy ... Wow !, you REALLY want real world advertising and real world money making scemes in ELITE: Dangerous, no matter how much resistance you come up against .. you keep coming in with new angles on the same idea, fair play to you ... you have an idea and you're running with it.

I don't think you will get too far with this but good luck :)

I still think it's a bad (game) idea.
Other players would lose, especially if a station owner denied access. This would be a personal decision and not a game context one. Also, I want FD to own the game. Selling stations for real money would touch the real world in an uncomfortable and unfair fashion. You might very well say it could make a poor person rich but it's game of fantasy. Making it a 'job' would spoil the recreational release for lots of players, IMO.
I could be so wrong about this - how many innovators have gone against the grain? As it is, I see more problems than benefits. Keep having ideas though, NeilRoy - I hope you hit the jackpot one day! :)

You're ... persistent for sure

Being as we can't own space stations in ED I guess this is a no-go idea.

You have to hand it to him - he is coming up with ways around many of the objections.

And actually - apart from the issue of not being able to own space stations - as an advertising idea for Frontier it isn't without merit..

Curious NeilRoy - are you in Sales or Marketing by any chance - if you don't mind me asking?

personally I really like the idea! Maybe it's the entrepreneur in me but everybody has to have an idea and a platform to get feedback on his proposal. so please stop putting this guy down just because he has an idea you don't like.

Why does it have to be a real world money generator? I would say that as long as the space station is bought with in game credits and this person is advertising this idea for the good of the community i.e. getting more people playing elite then what's the harm? He could sell tickets in game for this Cinema idea and therefore no real money has to change hands.

personally I think owning a space station would cost several hundred billion credits (or even trillions) and therefore would be out of the reach of an individual player. The only way a player could own a part of a space station would be to rent a certain amount of space in the station and then he could do whatever he wanted in there

only the police and somebody's status should refuse somebody entry into a space station and should not to be down to the owner of the particular station.

Who's put him down? :S Just don't like the idea in this game.
Ok, if such a thing as advertising for cinema tickets, or pizza, or whatever is in the game, I want the option to turn it off. I really don't want to see it.
Thread should be titled 'I wanna build me a bill board'.

As a money generator for FD and the added realism in having advertising in various places, I do not mind if they are real world advertisers as long as it is subtle and tastefully done.
The idea of a unique id number to get a discount is also a nice idea as it will encourage people to play if they want to buy something.
I just do not want it to limit access to any area as it is just an advert on a board. Also no station should be owned by anyone(apart from the planet in the game that it is orbiting i.e. FD)

As a money generator for FD

it would be a really bad money generator .. why bother - for the price of discounting the cinema tickets (or what have you) they could use that money for advertising in game magazines and the like.

Indeed NeilRoy is trying to overcome obstacles in what is basically a terrible idea. He simply wants to profit from the game.

so please stop putting this guy down just because he has an idea you don't like.

Who are you - His personal PR guy ?! The guy has come up with several money-making schemes which are terrible and against the spirit of why we all pledged to have ED made - Of course I am going to put his ideas down if they are bad as he's trying to ruin the game many of us have been waiting years for.

Perhaps they should be allowed to create stations or billboards, as long as they don't mind them being destroyed! Just think of it as focus group feedback ;)

Don´t expect any "innovative" suggestions which go beyond World of Warcraft or the last single player game they got off steam for $2.99 to be welcome here. The sandbox haters will come out and jump at you with all their concerns™

Some good feedback - both positive & negative.

To clarify -- my motivation here is to make Elite an extra-ordinary, innovative and viral game - rather than just best in breed space game.

I want to expand the target audience * no of players (2 very interesting threads recently on this topic, one by Erimus) -- am trying to gauge the sentiments of the forum, find objections and find ways round them.

The current thread's idea would be almost like franchising out the marketing campaign to players of the game -- without having adverts within the game itself.. the advertising would be in shop windows -- there would be unobtrusive codes on the sides of space stations. Imagine all those years ago if you had the chance to get the local newsagent to post an Elite friendly poster in the window -- and then get a few quid for any new customers they brought in... Could this go viral?

BTW - With this particular idea was not thinking about requiring access to a space station or to have an advert on the space station... rather to fly round a space station and see a code on one of the panels. The name and coords of the system would be in the local shop. Very unobtrusive.

Like the feedback about this was requiring billions of credits. And having to club together. Almost as if you want 10 players to build the space station.. 10 players from a particular town. And then they can go round the town's local shops and give them 'Elite friendly' stickers. (The natural evolution would be for elite credits paying for local goods for local people.. but that's another thread). I did thought I read a thread about mining not just for trading - but also for building structures?...

Dodec 12 sides not 20... no one caught me up on that one.. come on peeps !

Wrt private messages -- for the moment, would like to keep all discourse on the forum as it's very interesting to see all POVs come forward, as long as they're in good taste. Also I have no probs getting -ve reputation points for those who feel I'm banging on about the same thing they don't want.

Agreed. Taking arguments in to private messages is not cool.
