I want one of these

Awesome if you had unlimited funds and the space to install it. Of course ED would need to open up some sort of force feedback API for it to really come into its own.

Simply providing the 6 degrees of movement of your ship would be a start :) And extremely easy for FD to do. A bigger effort would also be, like you said, an API that included anything else relevant for feedback (where you're hit and how hard and by what, your engine size and current effort, etc).

*really* wish they would do this or at least acknowledge that they know we want it :)

I'm sure they do (they do read these forums I understand) but it is as ever a matter of priority. At the moment they will be going for the big wins and so the changes that will benefit the most amount of players. Force feedback and even VR represent a tiny minority of the player base unfortunately.

Has anyone heard of an affordable consumer-oriented attempt at a motion simulator? Keep us informed if you hear of any.

Here are a couple in development I have found. None are really being sold though.

6DoF Motion Simulator - Looks promising. Made specifically with racing games in mind.

FeelThree - Only 3 degrees (only rotation).
