I want the little automated turret we use for shooting incoming missiles to shoot drones too.

Hell, if its an automated turret no matter how small, let them shoot anything that's attacking us. it doesn't make much sense to limit them to only missiles when we get attacked even more often by drones now. Pirates shouldn't have things their way when no normal civilization would allow it if they had the technology to stop them.

The turrets work on guardian sentinels too.
problem is the location of the turrets.
attacker must be in range of the turrets or else: no dice,

I agree, they should shoot at literally everything if you tell them to. I get the game was built for ECM vs torpedo, chaff vs gimbals, point defence vs seekers just like energy vs shield, projectile vs hull. Very simple, but it would be more realistic that ECM jams EVERYTHING, chaff should produce blooms or interference that screws up all radar tracking (actual chaff in a fighter looks like thunderstorms on weather radar... just big blobs of garbage) and the point defence turrets, like in "The Expanse", should shoot anything within range.

I'd clarify something; point defence shoots limpets owned by ships which are hostile to you. If you want to shoot down limpets fired by a ship, you must aggress them first by shooting them out similar.

Because shooting limpets with a PDT isn't a crime, it would be open to exploit if you could just sit there, say, shooting a miner's limpets without repercussion.

A couple notes for OP
  • location of the PDT matters; a PDT on the top of your ship can't hit limpets coming from underneath.
  • targeted collector limpets move faster than PDT can track. The collector needs to be moving pretty much towards the PDT if you want to shoot it down.

yes, hatch breakers are a problem to miners of course, and location of the turret didn't occur to me until now, so thanks for that. some pirates are pacifists they sit back and let their drones steal for them. if I set it up right I can avoid a lot of losses this way.
