I want to be a SAR pilot. Please, give me the tools.

Hi. This game is great! You can trade, fight, bounty hunt, pirate...

ED will rely high on multiplayer. You can do a litle of everything and be, happy.
This game is to play slowly and enjoy, every moment. Well, if you ask me, wat I really wanted to do, is Search and Rescue missions. Players and NPC's; if they do not calculate well fuel consumption, they can be lost in space easily. If you don't repair a ship or go to a heavy fight, some internal systems could fail and make the ship, inoperable. Some debris need to be salvaged near stations or, after a 'heavy' fight. Cargo is lost in space. Planets and space stations need emergency evacuation and medicine for dangerous virus. And on, and on...

Can a long range special SAR ship be added? Maybe a litle and a medium ship. Some special cargo hold for fuel, infirmary, fragile medicament containers. Wat you think? Maybe colored in read and yellow with flashing high visible strobs; a special paint job! A non fighter commander, could lost himself in space, helping everyone; even pirates. You could be also, based on a system station and do missions, from the BB or USS in the near / far systems. Reply to help distress beacons, from human an AI Commanders.

Please, Mr. Braben, let me be a SAR space pilot.

Regards.

*the other 'game', name I will not say, has a SAR ship for medical help and transport.

that sort of thing would be OP when outfitted as a long range explorer though.

Yes, you're kind of right but, SAR ships needed to be easily recognized, visually and on radar as non combatant units. That's the reason for the 'special' paint job. Missions and game logic needed to be changed / added, I think.

Some nice ideas here. I personally want as many different roles as possible in the game. S&R could be a fun one, especially once we can move about in our ships and board other vessels it provide another thing to do another option than shoot and kill everything.

This could actually be pretty cool.
Not to mention the CLASSIC sci-fi situation of a player arriving at a distress beacon...only to find the pirate who activated it!
I don't see this happening as much with players though. If self-destructed (due to running out of fuel and needing to restart) ships remained persistent until found could be salvaged as well as space debris from combat, then SAR could be more intertwined with a salvage role. To make this even more profitable; bounties and exploration data that the player had not turned in (which is lost on ship destruction) could be recovered via "blackbox" of the ship, placing those profits into the salvagers transaction page to be recovered at a station and of course able to be lost again for the next salvager/recovery vessel.
NPC's could have pre-generated blackbox data to turn in to emulate player value.
USS's could have derelicts that have system data unlocked for a player, which again could be sold to Universal Cartographics.

This has such an amazing potential. Emergent gameplay and all that...

I really do hope the FSD/Hyperspace failures will make it to the game together with something similar to what OP mentioned -- I would love to see a player come to aid my stranded behind! (also, please bring back manual distress beacon!).

On a side note: also agreed about salvaging data from wrecks and debris. Perhaps even have a dedicated "security specialist" Contact in stations (in less-than-reputable areas) just for cracking those...

Yeah, this sounds like an idea that has real legs. Hopefully we'll see some interesting and well defined roles appearing other than the current four or five we have. Have some rep.

"Hi I'm your local SAR pilot at your service. It'll be 100.000 credits for 2 tons of fuel sir. What? Piracy? No no no, I'm providing a valuable service. Now hurry up, my ship's trigger is a bit loose and the more we spend here the more chances of an accident. Oh and I meant 150.000."

Really, I think all you need to do is provide the ability to carry fuel canisters in your cargo hold and refuel another ship with them. Maybe have a remote version of the repair module that allows you to repair other ships...

I want to be a cop. I would love there to be an option in the log in screen, but only if someone is attacking a space station or firing on ships in the no fire zone, to log in flying a police viper at that station.
