Newcomer / Intro I want to play and have fun

I came back after 5 years to this game and listened to all the advice and tried to follow it. I feel like I think that some people don't understand that I don't understand this game. It's hard to explain but I need help and I don't know how to explain what I need/want here.

Don’t try to follow all the advice just that about something that sounds interesting to you.

At its heart Elite is about flying around in your ship doing things to earn money that lets you keep going. The complication is that there are so many activities and variations on them that will let you do that.

I would suggest using the training missions available from the menus these are useful in several ways besides letting you learn, as they are repeatable they are quite a good way to setup your controls so that you are happy with them (this can make a huge difference to the game), they are also a good way to see what various activities are like.
Keep in mind that some of the scenarios are effectively harder than what you are likely to experience in the game itself at least as far as the NPCs are concerned.

All the advice you get from anyone will only be to how to play the game the way they play.....do not follow advice, listen to advice, use it to help you decide what to do, be it mission running, foot combat, AX combat or exploration, but do NOT follow it verbatim. If you ask for advice on exploration I can tell you how I do, then I will advise you to try different things until you find something you enjoy.

In ED, nobody does. Those who claim to do just haven't played enough to find the things they don't know.
You can just do it - worst case, you'll end up with a hangover in brand new (well, whatever goes for "new" in this context) Sidewinder.

Going through the startup tutorials will acquaint you with the basic mechanics. Unlocking all the ship Engineers will acquaint you with all the classic game loops. Once you get bored of that, there's Powerplay (ok, that one is somewhat neglected) and the BGS. Ever wanted to own your own stellar system?

Ask youself "what do I enhoy doing?"

Do you like to explore? Smuggle? Trade? Fight ships? Fight in combat zones? Mine? Team up with others?

Elite has all those things covered, and more. Without something more specific, it's a little hard to help you out. But, try asking as best you can - I'm sure someone will get back to you ;)

I feel you.

So, in addition to the things all the others here have said, maybe we can narrow it down a little bit more:
  • Do you need help in setting up your input devices? Do you need advice on what input devices to use?
  • If you don't feel comfortable flying your ship, go through the training missions more than once, but don't bother mastering all the combat missions (yet). Still got questions about the movement of a ship or SRV?
  • Speaking of "SRV", do you need help with all the abbreviations and special lingo that is used?
  • Are you at a complete loss at what to do next in-game, i.e. finding a "purpose", a short term goal or a long term goal?
  • Are you confused about the current iteration of the game called Odyssey ("on-foot content"), or the difference between the recent "live" and "legacy" modes?
  • Do you have questions about what ship to use for what activity?
  • Do you need cash? I mean, in-game. ;)
  • Maybe you have heard about engineers and engineering, but aren't sure on how it's done?
  • Do you want to play together with others, but are unable to find other players?
One general advice I followed: just focus on one thing at a time.
I'm not a long time veteran, but I have been playing ED regularly for over 1,5 years now. So far, I've never been to the center of the galaxy, have never mined a single asteroid, and have never engaged in any kind of community goal or political powerplay. It's not that I don't want to! ED is just such a vast game with so many different gameplay systems that my focus was simply elsewhere.

In ED, nobody does. Those who claim to do just haven't played enough to find the things they don't know.
Also, very much this.

In addition to above advice, there are several great 3rd party internet tools. The absolute #1 tool I would recommend to a new player is:

INARA

Login and then click on Commander. From there you can see your commander & ships in an easy format. It makes life soooo much nicer. When you get into unlocking engineers... voila. Want to find a station? Easy! Looking to buy a ship? Modules? Find the stn selling them. Easy!

Joined Friday, made one post, left immediately and never came back. Obviously, not too concerned about getting any help.

No need to do that. I learned the vast majority of it by hanging out in this thread and asking questions. The guys in that thread are some of the best in the game. Anything you need to know, they know.

I'm ranked on INARA at 1,387 and I've been playing less than a year, all thanks to the guys in that thread.

Edit to add: I have been in a squadron for exactly 24 days. I was actually asked to join back in August of last year, but I wanted to wait until I had a decent grasp of the game. I wanted to be more of an asset than a liability. I was asked by @Rat Catcher. I met him on that thread.

Absolutely plan to hang here. Im pretty social as a player though so i definitely want to find a group to play with. The last Squadron i was in was very large and active. Im hoping to find a good sized group and tag along as im learning lol

I know. I looked. Most squadrons are, hence my suggestion that looking for one is sort of worthless. Hang out in that thread, ask whatever you want and believe me it will be explained to you in great detail. I'm sure you can fly with anybody there you want.

Right now, I'm sort of worthless as I just got a full HOTAS setup and I'm learning to fly and fight all over again.

Welcome back!
I'm actually in the same boat as you. I bought the game way back when, puttered around and then left for a number of years. Picked back up the game recently and interestingly enough asked our very own Lhorndra for some advice on setting up my own HOTAS.
Do you need help in setting up your input devices? Do you need advice on what input devices to use?

My point is, this community will be your most valuable asset. Try starting out with our awesome YouTube community like ObsidianAnt, TheYamiks, D2E Astronomy, Hawkes Gaming. Definitely check out INARA and other 3rd party sites. Get familiar, because you'll spend as much time in game as you will on external sources.
Good Luck CMDR o5
