I want to sit down at stations and ports

I dropped into the forum today to post about this very thing, as well as other environmental interactions. As station and settlement interiors are likely to be used for Cmdrs to meet, hang out and plan trips/missions. Being able to interact with the environment in a variety of ways could very well be considered frivolous, but could also add some layers of variation and dynamics to the areas.

I think we should be able to:
  • Sit in a variety of places
    • Individual seats or bar stools
    • Row of seats
    • Other small objects, such as low crates, steps and maybe even parts of our ships landing gear
  • Lean on objects in the environment
    • Walkway barriers
    • Bar and bar tables
    • Walls
    • Windows (to allow for a wider angle view)
    • Taller objects (such as large crates)
    • Store/service counters
For objects we could sit on, some additional thoughts:
  • Whilst at stools, it would be good to be able rotate to new positions to look around
  • For rows of seats I think it would be good to be able to sit at any spot, not just pre-designated spaces
  • And also to be able to 'strafe' whilst on rows of seats. e.g. to slide along to give someone else space to sit
For objects we could lean against, they could be context sensitive, and allow us to face a variety of directions depending on the object (characters leaning on one or both arms respectively). Here's how I imagine each of the above:
  • Walkway barriers
    • Able to face in any direction
    • Whilst facing 'over the edge' of a barrier, be able to look directly down over the edge
  • Bar and bar tables
    • Face in any direction
  • Walls
    • Face 180º (left to right) away from the wall
  • Windows
    • Face 180º (left to right) away from the window
    • If facing the window, have our Cmdr lean closer to the window for a wider angle look out/inside
  • Taller objects (such as large crates)
    • Face any direction
  • Store/service counters
    • Only face the counter where there are conversations with an NPC
    • Face any direction where there's no NPC interaction
There's likely a bunch of design considerations needed for this kind go thing (thinking of mouse players, rapidly throwing the mouse around here). But in any case, being able to have our Cmdrs interact with environments I think could be a lovely touch to make environments 'usable'.

Oh, and while we're there, let's have more bar window seats looking out at the landing bays.

Tbh I had an odd thought pop in my head when first thinking about on-foot explo - how weird it would be to walk along and find a solitary chair in the wilderness of a deserted planet, and be able to sit on it and chill. Inb4 that ends up being a new thing for memorials....

Would be nice for stations to actually become social hubs where we could get out of the pilots seat and chill for a while with some other pilots and ground crew, even if they are only NPC's. I see lots of vehicles moving around in stations, but no ground crew at all and that makes the game really seem deserted.

Heh, to be honest. I'd considered adding in the ability to sit on the surface of planets and rock edges too.

Why do I want this feature?

seriously from subnautica and metro exodus, just sitting down is, effectively pointless and yet.
I do it anyways.

Well, in EDO you cannot sit nor jump in stations.
Could be due to the rushed release
Or an anti-trolling stance... you sitting on a bench and some tard jumping up and down on your head... it's not exactly the thing i want to see when i log in Elite.

So i cannot say that i'm bothered about the lack of sit/jump in stations. Even crouch should be disabled - it's really pointless, although it did create the premise of some rather funny YT movies.
