I-War (Deluxe Edition)

It appears I-War is on steam for £5. I know that it and 'Edge of Chaos' have been on GoG for ages for £8, but thought some of you might like to know...

I still have the boxed version with all goodies :-D
The only Game from the past I didn't sell (or couldn't because nobody wanted it *g* - technical space games are such a niche ^^)

I-War and it's expansion (Defiance) is one of the best space sims ever made, but most people never even heard of it.

I-War 2 was a bit different, but it was an epic game. It didn't sell very well though, so they never continued the series. It was released around the time when sci-fi games were dying off :(

Same here - Pretty sure I still have the poster from I-War 1 framed in storage somewhere.

I-War 2's LDS drive freedom to move around a solar system is the main reason I backed Elite: Dangerous — Nothing more satisfying that zipping past planet at those speeds. :D

I would love to have some kind of formation flight in supercruise, it was always nice to see friendlies catching up on my way to shoot some Marauders. If it was possible, I would replace ED's white dust or whatever it might be called with I-War's HUD lines, too.

Indeed, I-War 2 LDS + correct scales for systems was fantastic at the time.

That, and the HUD. The HUD was great, and in fact much better for doing FAOFF things than ED space dust.
I would love an option to add IWar-2 style velocity indicators in ED.

Also, Nukes where quite fun at times and so where moded asteroid fields where things moved like in SW ep. IV asteroid field.

Definately agree on that.
Frontier could easily change it to reflect that it's part of the HUD - change the color and/or make it so that when the canopy breaks, the 'dust' doesn't show up in the cracked area. (like with orbit lines)

I played both (and still have E-O-C), but when I upgraded my PC I-War (with Defiance) could not handle it (and went WAY too fast!). I shall have to have another look.

I really liked the way that long range jumps were done at Lagrange points as well.

I think ED should steal that idea and it would make a lot of sense with the way FTL works in the game :D

As well as the 'booster' for the extreme range jumps. Jefferson Clay could be a bit acerbic, but he knew what he was talking about.

Just bought I-War.

Nice to see there's still a bit of interest in the old gal. I've still got the original boxed version. :)

And I still have nightmares about the Gunstar mission, or trying to crash land the corvette in the back of the carrier 'Alabama'. The game could be bleedin' hard sometimes. :)

Or catching the anti-matter bomb in that bucket thing. OMFG :p

Also spending ages trying to complete a defense mission, only to shoot a ship's engines out and it drift and crash in to the station I'm protecting lol

I-war 1 has a great intro as well. It's almost 15 minutes long :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C9AN1hpbw2Y

Speaking of I-War 1's intro, it also had some great multiple endings. I especially loved the branching decisions you could make!

Refresher for the good, bad and neutral endings from what I can remember:
GOOD, A
Join the good guys - kill the corrupt president - win the war

GOOD, B
Join the president for loyalty reasons - get orders to destroy hospital transport - refuse to kill them, and instead turn on your triggerhappy wingman - rejoin the good guys, and kill the corrupt president to end the war.

What I loved about this one, was that there was no direct hint or quest marker that told it was possible to turn sides! Only a very subtle comment from your character, which could have been taken two ways.

BAD
Join the president for loyalty reasons - get orders to destroy hospital transport - comply with killing them - get kicked out of the navy once the good guys won the war - regain command of a new ship after the war (a literal garbage transport ship) :D

NEUTRAL ENDING
Skip the entire 'mysterious ships' plot - attack and destroy a large Indie base - big victory for the Commonwealth, but the war still continued.

I love I-War! Both of them. :D
They're both my top space games of all time.

Unfortunately I can't get the original to run very well on windows 10.
And I-war 2 wprks, but crashes rather a lot. :(

But I love pretty much everything about both games. Most parts in many ways are far superior to ED, IMHO.

Some of the missions were infuriating though, like evacuating that base and getting out of range, before it explodes.
With no manual docking, you had to wait for the painstakingly slow docking Autopilot to dock you. Lol.

There was another mission involving satellites or something you had to dock to, while under fire.
Again, the docking Autopilot was usually the cause of death. Lol

I loved Jefferson Clay though, his sly comments as to what to do next were great. And his comments in general.

Best conversation ever
Jefferson Clay': Would you dig up my grave?
The player: I beg your pardon?
Jefferson Clay: I said, "Would you dig up my grave?"
The player: No, of course not.
Jefferson Clay: So I gather you don’t approve of being disrespectful to the dead.
The player: No... Why?
Jefferson Clay: Because of this. Me. Being here now. Being here dead. That’s why. I was killed. I am dead. But would they let me rest in peace? Would they? Oh, no! They would not let me be. Some sonofab^^^h recovered the hulk of the Dreadnaught and pulled out this sorry digital facsimile of my mind. An unholy capture of my last thoughts taken without consent during my final glorious medal-winning battle. And then they drag me kicking and screaming back into service. I’ll tell you, this is one odd navy boy. You don’t get time off even for being dead.
The player: Listen - if it helps at all, I didn’t ask for some kind of digital command assistant.
Jefferson Clay: Digital Assistant?! Digital Assistant!? That’s me. Get your untrained crew out there into darkest space. And if they drift into a bit of trouble - wander off the edge of their limited simulator academy safe territory into trouble then the crew can drop their milk and cookies press a few buttons and the Captain-O-Matic pops out the answer. Well I don’t think so.
The player: So you're not going to help?
Jefferson Clay: Did I say that? No. Only I am gonna play it like a computer - Stupid dumb-ass questions in - stupid smart ass sarcastic remarks out. Now, if you ever manage to ask me a question which doesn’t insult my experience and intelligence, I daresay I’ll force a civil answer out of myself.
