Hey guys if you like space sims, you can pick up Iwar and Iwar2 on GOG. They are on sale at $2.09 at the time of posting. This is about £1.20.

To me that game had a to high a Learning curve 2 diff overlays for the keyboard to learn and once u pitted against 3 adveracy rigth at the start, had very good grafix and used newtonian laws in the game but the utterly failed on Learning curve and simplisety in controling the spaceship :mad:
after a week i gave up, i whanted a game not a Learning program for nasa astronauts.

I have two questions about I-Wars.

1. I-War 1 - there is a bug involving high framerates which manifests as damage not registering when you hit targets (weapon fire clearly impacts the targets, there is yellow particle effect of hull impact, no purplish shield glow, but no damage or minimal damage is inflicted). Any fixes, in particular without using external software to slow down your machine?

2. I-War 2 - fails to start on Windows 7 with widescreen monitor, only menu backdrop with spinning 3D head of main character as a brat appears but no actual menu.


And yeah, interface is terribad in both games.

Yes I second this. You cannot play IWar2 on Windows 8 either (or 8.1) - although the game installs and runs, it runs at hyperspeed, and cannot be slowed down. Effectively making it unplayable. Noone has a solution for this either I'm afraid. It's Windows XP or nothing I think.

what ? i'm playing IWAR 2 just fine on Windows 8! without trickering of any kind.

there is some clipping sometimes on some objects like the lucrecia base (the biobomber) in the effrit cloud, but it's otherwise very playable, the infertace being what it is which is not very practical to say the least but i cant do much about that.

i have zero hyperspeed problem.

i have the original cds however.


i never really made the first 1 or defiance work on something else than windows 95, it worked almost correctly on xp, though i had some bugs with the controls, i couldnt make it work on vista however, it worked a bit better on 7, but like xp with bugs, never tried on 8. i might try once again on a virtual xp some day.

And if this is the case - what hardware are you running on - what gfx card and what drivers? Cause it won't work for me :(

ok well i think i never had any trouble running it at all on any system as far as i remember. i know i've tried it on an earlier os than 8 unfortunately i dont remember which one, so i wont say that it does work on 7(if not it was either vista or xp or both) but i'm surprised that some have issues.

what i have now is a Nvidia geforce GTX 660M with 2 GB ddr5 + 8 Gb ddr3 of RAM.
my proc is 2.4GHz (x2) i7 3630QM (64 bits)
Hd is 7200 RPM (500Go)

Was trying to find a good youtube vid on playing this but they all seem to be for I-War 2. There is only 1 I could find for I-War but it is in German and sadly at this stage I cannot understand that language.

If anyone has any good links, please post them.

I am enjoying reading the manual but would still like to watch some vids of gameplay as my searches so far have proved fruitless.

Here's one. Iwar was much more awesome than Iwar2 in my opinion. It was also very difficult to get into but once you got it, you'd have ninja flying skills (proper newtonian). It's a shame he plays the game in that view mode, doesn't look as awesome as the game is from the cockpit.

Just a little help to those who dosen't know - you can play I-war1 in high resolution by using the nGlide wrapper found here.

It also makes all the small graphics errors go away.. [redacted]

I love both games but prefer the second. There are some pretty decent mods for it to including one that introduces some Elite like trading.

Thanks for that, yes I found that one on my search, I was really after a Lets Play / tutorial like one. The only one I saw was in German as I said so still trying to find an English one. :)

The GOG version plays with decent res as it uses Glide. In fact the GOG version was recently updated to 2.0 so GOG made some fixes which is great.

Yeah, I've tried to search for let's play type videos but all I found was the German one too. Ah well. I guess one doesn't exist. Hey - why don't you install it and start up a series :)

I'm thinking about it but ... it's probably gonna be a french LP. I migh do english later but i'm not too confident at speaking it, you know... the outrageous accent... But i'll surely give it a try one day.

Anyway i'm on windows 8.1, with a nvidia, and IWAR(+DEFiANCE) works pretty well. I had 2 copies of the original(Defiance was not sold as a standalone product).
Somehow, it may be my memory, but i thought it looked better before. I suppose it got old a bit and i only reallize it now. I have been trying to make it work on several OS, XP Vista and Seven. only now do i have a really working game.

I guess so.

I still have the original box, with the ship identification chart on paper and 2 game manuals with small differences between them, i have the reference card as well, and all in my own language ;)
anyway both the manual & ship identification chart are included on the other web site.
but not the soundtrack or ref. card.

He's got a You tube channel which takes you up to halfway through the first act.

I was going to carry it on but then the Elite Dangerous Alpha Happened and I've kind of been distracted.

The gog version appears to work fine on my 8.1 setup, although the x52 profile needed a lot of tweeking.

Still got to get my MP server up and running yet.
