I wish there was some kind of HUD widget that conveyed which direction you were moving.

As the title says. Sometimes it's difficult to gauge the disparity between orientation and your current direction of travel, particularly in chonkier ships that have a ton of inertia, and ESPECIALLY when flying with flight assist off. Space Engineers has something on the little artificial horizon to the right of the hotbar, there's a little "+" on it that shows your current drift.

Likewise, the Ace Combat series also has a useful little blip that conveys this, the little circle with three prongs sticking off of it sitting just off center in the linked screenshot.

At the moment the only real indication are the little specks of dust flying past the cockpit which are pretty difficult to see and interpret in the heat of the moment, at least for me.

Yes, I agree. It would be quite useful.

Even Frontier Elite 2 and First Encounters had a crosshairs that showed the actual direction of travel, so I’m not sure why they decided not to implement it in ED.

ISTR seeing early screenshots of the game where there was a second small circle to the right of the cockpit layout to match the target direction indicator on the left.

And the reason I remember was because I thought when I saw that second circle, "Hey! A Drift Indicator would be kinda nice!"

(in response to "just use debris") I don't think that's a good enough solution

If there's a throttle bar that's going to show something resembling your vector, the very least they could do is make it useable without relying on debris.

besides ship HUD's are terrible at present, and are in desperate need of a facelift.
