i5 4570, GTX 2060 Super, 8 gb DDR3 1600 RAM, HTC Vive Pro

How well do you think I can run Elite: Dangerous in VR with this set up?
I plan on upgrading my PC to better CPU / MOBO / RAM, but can't probably until next month. I can, however pick up an HTC Vive Pro next week. I used to play on PlayStation VR but I'm ready for better hardware.

I've heard differing opinions on VR High versus VR Ultra and that it mainly boiled down to supersampling. Do you notice much of a difference between VR High and VR Ultra? Can most people even see the difference in texture quality considering the resolution?

What's everyone's set up? Framerate?

It will be playable but your CPU will hold you back from getting 90FPS in some situations. More than 4 cores or 4 cores with hyper-threading will solve that. I used to have a i5 4760K and went to an i7 8700k which improved things a lot. Installing Elite to an SSD or NVme drive helps smooth out dropping out at stations and the like.

Some are more than happy with 45FPS using reprojection and you’ll certainly achieve that. VR high is fine. I normally go for VR ultra but put super sampling back to 1 and increase HMD quality until it starts to affect performance.

I’ve got an i7 8700K @4.9Ghz, 32GB of 3000MHz ram (16 is more than enough for Elite though), a M.2 NVMe drives and a Zotac Trinity RTX 3090. Currently have a Rift S and can get 80 FPS everywhere with HMD quality set at 1.75x. Getting an HP Reverb G2 on Tuesday!

I’m totally mad for VR though and started out with system much like yours.

I have a i5-4570S, 8gb ram and a rx590 and it can keep up fine on 3440x1440

So with your gpu being stronger I think it will fun fine for you.

I'm currently on i5-8400, GTX 1070 OC, 8Gb DDR4 @2666, Oculus Rift. I'm running a custom profile based on Exigeous display quality settings video. I get 45 FPS in stations (Easily spotted if you go to outfitting and the Please Wait blurs when the ship is spun on the landing pad), but otherwise I don't see any issues (apart from those in the Rift hardware, SDE/lack of resolution/blurring off-centre). I've been happy with this for the last few years, I can play for hours without any issues.

A very quick example

(Green for Nvidia GPU, Blue for Intel CPU, left of big GPU dip is Main Menu, the 2nd dip is climbing the elevator, the rest of the trace is sitting on the pad in Open, then shutting down)

If I was guessing I would expect that on VR high you will be ok.

PS. I tuned my graphics settings by running in non-VR without framerate lock, and optimised that number up. Then repeated that in VR checking for how often it dipped below 90.
Anti-aliasing was the biggest contributor to FPS reduction for me.

I'm upgrading to a 10 core i9, I forget the model, so the CPU bottleneck will be resolved. Its just not within my budget to do a full system upgrade and an HMD in one go. I'll only have to put up with drops in framerate for a few weeks. I just needed to know if its going to be tolerable or if my HMD will just sit until I upgrade so this was helpful.

I have the 2060 Super so I hope I get a little more out of my system. I have read that FXAA is good enough. Do you even notice a difference in clarity on VR with AA?

AA does make a difference but FXAA is good enough. It’s HMD quality that makes the biggest difference though and what you’ll probably find yourself messing with the most. It’s like super sampling but isn’t quite as demanding on the GPU.

Only some of the time. When I am busy, e.g. In flight, then not at all. However, when I have time to look for it, e.g. Main Menu, or in Station after touchdown, then the jaggies become apparent. However you are looking at a higher resolution HMD so your experience may differ.

Hey everyone, I want to thank you all for your help.

Sounds cheesy but I appreciate the fact that you took time out of your day to help with my questions.

I'm a lot more comfortable now. I understand that I probably won't be able to run ultra, in fact, I'll probably have to do a mix of VR medium and high, but at least my HMD will get use until I upgrade and I'm not headed for disappointment.

No problem and welcome to the VR club! The first time you sit in your ships is proper treat 👍
