I5 and GTX 660.. Can I run Rift?

Currently running the game in max setting and looking into buying the CV1 Rift when it drops.. Any cance I can still keep high settings with the Rift and still keep my graphics card??

Thanks!

You might be able to do it with shadows and AA off. Everything else should be fine at max. I had a GTX 670 but never tried Elite with it. Even on the 970, shadows in stations cause judder, so I'd say your chances of it working are 50/50. I'd wait for someone with your card to respond.

Thanks for the reply.

I'm looking forward to a VR experience!

I have an i7 4770k, and the gtx 670ftw 4gb in sli. I run Elite with blur and aa off, with all other settings on low-medium. Thats the only way i can get the game to run smoothly. I still get judder in stations and hyperspace like everyone else. I also get lots of judder while approaching a planet while in super cruise. So i would say a single 660 running Cv1, not a chance. Especially since the current DK2 is only 1080p needing running at 75hz and the video card recommended for that is the 770. CV1 is going to have a higher res screen (probably a 1440p) and running at 90hz with a higher fov. So, i'd say you need an upgrade. Just wait till CV1 comes up before getting anything new.

Thank you for the honest reply! Rep to you!

What would you suggest I upgrade my card/CPU to in order to be "future" proof in terms of ED VR?

2x 970gtx in sli would surely put you in the sweet spot for VR for quite some time. you could go with the 980 and add another later on. if my 670pe's ever die i'm going to go for 2 970's.

Unfortunately, no. MAYBE on rock bottom settings, but I doubt even that. I am running a 970 right now, and I run my settings at medium, with bloom on and AA. If I go to high settings, out in space everything is totally fluid.. but I can't do space stations, and even sitting on outpost landing pads are a tad jiddery. With AA on, I can't really see a difference between high and medium, so that is what I run, as 75fps is paramount for your experience. If the CV1 comes out at 1440 and 90hz... i doubt you will be able to play with that card even on low. My 470 couldn't play 1080/75hz on lowest settings.

To run high+ settings with 1440+90hz.. you're going to need to run whatever pair of cards are the best at CV1 release date in SLI.

oh one more thing.. a 980 today, plus a DK2... worth every penny until the CV1 comes out. It's still a year away.

whats your CPU clocking in at? and mem? your 970 should beat my 2 670's and I run ultra. the game is not 100% fluid but the shakes are minimal. I get a little hiccup everytime i jump to hyper space but thats about it. Are you sure your PCI-e 3.0 is enabled in bios?

I'm thinking of going SLI with the GTX 970.. So itll be a better than the 980.

I have an I5 and used to have a heavily overclocked GTX670.

it was perfectly playable on minimum detail but there was some stutter around asteroid belts and in some space stations.

some people claim to have perfectly flawless experiences of low end hardware such as yourself, but personally I think it is sub par...

And that is on DK2. CV1 I expect to up the base requirements even more, though I imagine you will still be able to run at DK2 res and refresh rates on a CV1 if you wanted.

PS to answer your question NO....... if you get a VR headset of any flavour, with your GPU you will be playing ED on minimum settings NOT full!..

I upgraded to a GTX980 and even that sometimes drops frames (outside of the normal game stutter which is engine related) from time to time.

mostly it runs superbly now with my new GPU (that is with my 15 2500k @ 4.3ghz and 12gb of RAM on windows 7 64bit)

twice as good. It is my plan eventually too.

SLI GTX970 is not going to be twice as good as a single GTX980.

without overclocking of any of the cards, SLI GTX970s will be about 1.5x better than a gtx 980 (software depending)

a GTX980 is abou 20% faster than a GTX970 and on top of that 2x GTX970s is not a 100% increase over a single card.

I am not saying it is not a worth while upgrade, it certainly is, I am just trying to do a little expectation management.

You think the 980 is 1.5X better performer than a 970? Naturally a pair of 970s won't be exactly twice as good... It was a big rounding. But most benchmarks I have seen put 980s around 10% better framerates over the 970 around 100 frames, and in some games, only 3 or 4 % better.

Honestly, i would hold out a bit before buying a new card. Especially if you are looking at Nvidia. AMD has put out their R9-290x 8gb 512bit series, so I imagine Nvidia will be announcing something soon. I was hoping for the 980ti but it looks like that is being pushed of.
Im in the same boat though, my 670 cards are showing their age. Im going to be upgrading for GTA 5 and hopefully Nvidia will have a gtx980 8gb by mid March.

Depends on where you are. I was running a GTX470, so... needed to upgrade to use my dk2 at all. 970 fit the bill just fine... and I can either look at an aditional 970 for SLI when the CV1 comes out, or a pair of even higher end cards, whatever is out at that time, if it looks like it will be needed.

If you droped the resolution to 720p you can. Its playable.. but you will have switch out of the rift for in station trade and Galaxy map manipulation. Which is totaly fine. Cause in combat you will have very few problems over the 1080p (long range targets are bad for either 1080p or 720p.) You won't miss out on too much, but the experience is a wowing.
