i7 3930k

I'm probably going to build a new PC around the GTX 1080 Ti, but I'm looking to upgrade my current rig in the meantime. Will an i7 3930k 6 core @3.2GHz handle ED well enough for VR? On a side note, how well does ED handle multi-threading?

This topic may be best in the support forums. Here's a link to a CPU site. The 3930 has a score of 5.9 and there appear to be better options, but of course budget will determine a lot. You can use that site to compare CPU options.

Personally I'd get the best CPU I could afford if running a top end card like a 1080. The 4790 has a much higher rating and is cheaper, for example. However, I am not an Intel expert so I may be off on that.

I don't think I worded my OP very well. I have the 3930k and a GTX 680 in my current PC. I don't want to upgrade my PC or CPU until the GTX 1080 Ti comes out. I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to a GTX 970 for VR given that I'll still be running the 3930k. If the 3930k can't cut it for VR, then I'll just wait for the 1080 Ti.

If you are looking at building a PC with a GTX 1080 Ti then I'd go with one of the new Broadwell chips from Intel... I actually have an i7 3930k and it is a beast but its an older X79 chipset processor where as the new Broadwell chips are based on the X99 chipset and will work much better with the GTX 1080... You get the benefits of the X99 chipset improvements over the x79 and a 14nm processor, whats not to like…

Not sure how deep the wallet goes but the 6800k overclocked to 4gig should do well but a 6900k would be sweet

Have you tried VR with the 3930k? I'm definitely building an entirely new rig around the 1080 Ti. I'm wondering if I can do VR with the GTX 970 and 3930k as a stopgap.

Instead of the 970 have you considered an AMD RX480? It's as fast as a 980 and much cheaper than a 970.

No... have not tried VR with my 3930k but I do off load the physics setting to my processor in the NVIDIA control panel and that works great but not sure if that would be enough to help out the GTX 970 doing VR...

I did think that the key bottleneck for pretty much any PC nowadays was it's graphics card.
For example, I have an ancient quad core i5@3.4ghz. As ED uses multiple cores, last time I checked it was only using 50% resources of each core.
Based upon that, I'd say that pretty much any new i5 or above should be more than capable of running ED. Spend your dosh on the best GPU you can.

I have a 5930K, and I will only say this, it is expensive, but worth every damn penny. Overclocks like a beast, and can handle any application I have thrown at it without ever breaking a sweat. I will have this thing for years most likely. My best CPU purchase ever purchased.

Just read it is a 3950, lol. Sorry, disregard my post.

I've got a 3930K@4.2Ghz with a 980TI it runs max ED without breaking a sweat and powers everything (ED included) that I've played on the Rift so far without issue.

+1 hahaha ^_^

Once the GTX1080 I want is released, I will be trying it on my 3930k rig. Its OC@4.6ghz and has run everything so far just fine.. My current limiting hardware are my 780Ti's..

I'm actually surprised that I did not find benchmarks of the 3930k running a gtx1080.

Just for reference, can you please run task manager whilst you have ED running and advise why % of your CPU for each core is in use.
