General / Off-Topic Iain M Banks

I have some of the Culture series books to read, but not all of them. Does it matter what order they are read in? Or can I just go for it, and read what I have:

1-2-3.. then 8-9-10.. I'm missing 4-5-6-7..

Well, when I say read, I have the audiobooks and listen to them while at work.

Brian :)

P.S. I have read upto about half way through State of the Art, and need a quick answer...

I really like Ian Banks' books, with or without the M. As far as I remember, they are all pretty much self contained, although the last one I read (Surface Detail) had a little throw back to an earlier book. So go ahead and enjoy what you can get your hands on :D

I'd definitely start with the first three in order of publication, beginning with Consider Phlebas.

The lastest in the series in is The Hydrogen Senata, Start at the first.. Consider Phlebas. :)

The whole history of the M is quite funny.

He was trying to sell sci-fi when he was trying to start out as an author and no publisher would touch him.

He then writes the Wasp Factory and has a huge runaway success with it, and suddenly the publishers want more more more.

His middle name is Menzies which is named after his two great uncles and is a very old family name. When they see the book they phone him up and say "are you ashamed of being a Menzies son?" and lay on the big guilt trip.

So when he sold the sci-fi he put in the M to honor (or to shut up) his family.

Listening him tell this story in a dry Scottish accent is hilarious.

He also loves playing PC games and spends six months of the year playing games and the other six writing.

I'm reading through his Sci-Fi novels - I'm on Excession at the moment - thoroughly enjoying them.

It's sad to think that The Hydrogen Sonata is his last.

R.I.P. Mr Banks - taken too young.

Yes RIP a writer with great imagination.

when i found out Iain Banks was dying i went out and bought the Hydrogen sonata, i'm nearly finished.

i'm sad he's dead and sad that there wont be any more culture Books :(

Iain Banks

I believe he had one more book to publish which was meant to be done before the cancer got worse. Too late.
I've had so much enjoyment from his works over the years. I wish all his fans could have given a little of that joy back to counter the pain of that disease.

Look to Windward, old friend.

Yes in 11 days.

A sad loss, my thoughts go to those he leaves behind.

I have read all the Culture novels and some of his mainstream work. I will reread them all in the run up to Elite Dangerous to ensure the half of my ED character taken from his novels is played as a fitting tribute.

RIP Iain (M.) Banks.
