General / Off-Topic Iain M Banks

Even after the announcement, still far too soon! Iain (M) Banks was one of my favorite authors. In his whisky tour of Scotland, Raw Spirit, he said that his favourite dram that's not incredibly rare, or only available at the distillery etc. was the 21 year cold Glenfiddich matured in Cuban rum casks. It has been one of my favourite whiskies, even though they changed the recipe, and I'll be pouring one out tonight. RIP

Ahh... when I was a drinker (I'm teetotal now), I had a penchant for the Islay malts.
But any good single malt in a storm, eh?

The Scottish writer Iain Banks announced on April 3, on its website, an "advanced cancer of the gallbladder" left him more than a few months to live.

  • He Had the opportunity to ask his girlfriend Adele, to make of the honor of Becoming His widow.
  • To express his opposition to the war in Iraq, for example he had torn his passport before sending it to the Prime Minister, Tony Blair.
  • He still had, in 2006, sold his two Porsches, his BMW and Land Rover to convert to the hybrid car and support the ecological cause.

A courageous man, it sure.

the name I know but I've never read any of his books, why have I heard of him before?, has he written anything for games or movies.

My favorite is Surface Detail - especially the Falling Outside The Normal Moral Constraints' attitude :)

you should try the Audio books, Peter Kenny really gets the characters right :)
Brian :)

Anyone into SF should read his Culture books. Witty, wise, insightful, compassionate, brutal, exciting, thought provoking....

Mr. Banks truly enriched the universe.

Very sad news indeed. I was devastated when I found out about his terminal cancer earlier this year and left a long a heartfelt note on his website thanking him for the enjoyment I've had over the years from his books. A wonderful writer with a soaring imagination and wonderful sense of humour. By all accounts a damn good bloke in person too.

The world just got a bit more boring without Iain Banks in it.

No more Culture novels:(....now that is a sad thing. I hope to see a lot of Banks style ship names when ED starts.

So hard to pick a favorite but I dont have to, so I reccomend "Use of Weapons" or "Look to Windward" for Sci-Fi and The Crow Road or Whit for non sci-fi

I remembered this video short today, so I thought I'd dig up the link and post it here. It is pure Bank's at heart and you can tell these guys had deep a love Iain's work in the production of this. Iain's work will live on, hopefully one day someone will pick up one of his story and turn into a full blown movie.
