Very sad news indeed. I enjoyed his 'Culture' novels, but found that didn't mean I enjoyed all of his output. A great writer though and this will be a loss to the sci-fi community at large.

Cheers,

Drew.

That's seriously bad news. Not many do SciFi better than him.
Edit: On reflection, no living author is even close, as far as I know.

Heard this at work today. Very unwelcome news.
Great to see how he is publicly responding to it and great to see how much support he and his family are getting.
His writing has already contributed a lot of wisdom and enrichment to the world, my world anyway.
I guess a lot of us on this forum are old enough to have seen a few friends go through hard times like these. Mr Banks is inspiring me still and will be for the rest of my life no matter what happens.

Yeah this is a bit devastating to be honest :(

Very sad.

I like many here, I would hazard a guess, have read and enjoyed all his Sci-fi novels, especially the Culture ones. I'm at Heathrow heading on a trip abroad, and in my backpack is the Use of Weapons.

A brilliant Author.

yeah - how many times have his books rescued me from the bore of international travel. funny, i used to fly globally daily/weekly and i can so recall sitting in the lounges and just being the happiest bunny to have a new banks book with me.

they nearly always managed to rip me out of the tedium of the day-today business life

We went to the same high school though he was far before my time, but when I was there he sent a batch of his books to the school.

I haven't read many of his books personally, but I am a fan of "The Wasp Factory" and "The Crow Road".

I know how much of an impact he's made towards Science Fiction and the fact he may not see another year is indeed tragic.

It's very sad news indeed. I've read most of his books as Iain M and just Iain. It's difficult not to get the feeling that he's not just a stunningly imaginitve writer but also a really likeable guy with a fantastic sense of humour. I hope his remaining days will be as pleasant as they can be.

As one of the greatest minds in modern Sci Fi, it'd be nice to see some sort of tribute to him in ED, like perhaps a station named after one of his ships.
