Elite / Frontier Ian Bell to unleash Classic Elite Free this weekend!

“20th September 1984 was the date that Elite was first seen by the world, thanks to the company that produced it, Acornsoft. Now’s a time when people are thinking back on the games they most enjoyed in the past, and I’m happy to take this opportunity to let them play one of them again.” Said Ian Bell.

Don't know if it's part of FDEV anniversary campaign but it's a really great news!

Goddammit! I can't find the power supply block for my Spectrum. I'm sure I left it in that cupboard in 1988

I'd love an Android/iOS port too... I can't find games emulating the thrill and the sandbox openness of Elite on mobile. Some alike are pretty but boring and/or on rails.

You need a game called Unknown.

Here's a screenshot I took on my iPhone a few mins ago.

It's good publicity for this game and I believe that relations between Braben and Bell are... well... less frosty now. Didn't they both share the same stage (albeit not at the same time) at a games conference last year?

Where's Andrew Gillett when you want him? Check the history of the alt.fan.elite newsgroup from 2001 for more details.... :)

The controversy about Elite:TNK only started when the Pocket PC version started to be sold for money. All the free versions available before then were quietly ignored by Frontier Developments. They almost certainly decided that they could not ignore the commercial release of a Pocket PC version especially as they had some of their own Pocket PC game development projects at that time.

Elite TNK is now available from Ian Bell's site. It's version 1.1 which is an updated version compared to version 1.0 which was released on 22 July 2001. No idea what the changes are, the "read me" doesn't say.

Hasn't that remake been out for ages?
Yes, but it was withdrawn in 2002 I think.
