Ice mining, what's it for?

So I've spent a few days mining in my asp, enjoyed mining for pantie and even when I find none, there are plenty of rocks that give me some tidy cash (while I wait for missions) but today I thought, hey let's try out ice mining (see different rocks) and umm wow.

Jumped in and got lucky, landed right by a cold diamonds rock. Got myself over 5 tons and settled in for my usual "ok there's the meat, now collect the gravy" at end of trip I realized There is no gravy! All the other ice rocks 're worth        all at galactic average and stations who will buy, pay way below.

So what am I missing?

Guess I'm off back to metallic mining where even lowest stuff is higher than most ice .

If you want to feed your family forget about ice mining,if you want to feed your family and get rich -metalic Mining
low temp. diamonds are rare than polonium on planets, however you can pirate them, thats another story.Bromellite is also rare but minable, need for some eng. unlocking.

Which begs the question: where do those NPCs find such quantities of low-temp diamonds? Apparently they grow faster inside T9 cargo racks than in rich ice rings.

Yeah I hear that pirating in Anarchy Ice Rings is the best place to go.

It's the secret "Sothis", with T9's hauling hundreds of tons of Low Temp Diamonds!

Ice mining sure is prettier than rock mining. All those ice chips flying off. Of course, it's also about the only time the fans on my 980Gtx spin up to audible levels.

Ice ring mining is best done when you have specific missions for it. Metallic rings, I'll just drop into and mine. Ice rings, not so much. Low temperature diamonds are several orders of magnitude rarer than Painite.

Ice mining is only really lucrative if you're running missions for it, and requires a different mentality than rock mining. Because most things in ice rings can have missions attached, and most things sell for squat without, there's no real reason to be as picky. I consider ice mining more of a strip mine operation. Go in, gobble up everything asap, and then haul it back to see what people will pay for it. Only use prospectors when you hit paydirt.

My reason for ice mining is completely separate from usual mining for cash rationale. Used to be mission/trader/miner/explorer before missions got nerfed as my primary money making activities (in order of preference and compensation rate).

But ice mining I did purely because I hate SRV scavenging. Obviously, for some mats, I still get in my SRV, but when all I want are common synthesis mats or bulk mats for regaining engineer rep, etc - then I put on my space mining hat and go to pristine ice rings and just randomly auto-mine while I listen to music or something.

An hour or so of ice mining will get me a ton of random common mats. RNG obviously varies what you fill up with, but I find with my usual 3-4 pristine ice spots I can get pretty much most the common mats in bulk without having to resort to SRV scavenging.

If you don't mind SRV, then do that. I'm not saying ice mining for common mats is better, just saying it is a very viable alternative if you prefer to stay in space rather than roam around in SRVs (which I got quite burned out on pre 2.2)

Spellcheck fail? (Or not? ;))

Yeah its really sad when you take out a T9's powersupply and it has 200+ LTDs on board and your clipper can only take 128.. such wastage @ 45k/t. I tried to return and refind a stranded T9 after cashing in my full cargo but never did find it. You need to be able to record exact coordinated I reckon, like you can on a planet surface.

There are missions for icy resources that are lucrative.
And if you want to fill your hold with diamonds like NPCs do, you need to map yourself asteroids that contain them (see first link in my signature).
