I'd like to pay a subscription fee please

A lot of players don't have that much money to spare. That's why I don't/can't play subscription games. I was lucky that I got a Tax rebate so I was able to fund the KS, and update my PC, but the money is gone now and not sure when I'll have any spare for gaming let alone a pint or 7.

Brian :)

This applies to a lot of people. Us mature types vary a lot finacially. Personally I have gone through phases of being quite wealthy and I can say from experience you get used to it and your perspective changes. You forget that £5 a month for entertainment can be just not justifiable when measured against what is needed.
I want FD to be funded, I want a way to contribute what I can afford when I can afford it. Cosmetic purchases fit this bill, as does the ability to make donations via in-game charities or something similar.
I am against subs purely because it WOULD lock some people out of the game, a minority perhaps but the very people who would enjoy this type of entertainment the most. So, very much no to subs.

In the long term, a subscription is equals one game has an exorbitant cost. What is bearable for subscriptions on other things, is not for a game. In my view

I study Engineering in germany and i hope to achieve a better life status after that. That means long working hours and perhaps a lot of traveling.
After getting used to all of this I plan to marry my girlfriend, having kids and do all the Important things a good husband and dad would do.
You see I will be very busy with my daily life and I don't know how much time I will have to explore the universe in Elite. So a subscription fee is the last thing I would pay for as a casual gamer just for a change of pace.

A subscription fee means keeping out most of the casual gamers, and I believe that FD wants a lot of us to experience their game.

Personally I don't see why this thread is still going. FD has never said that a subs system was part of the plan. I think that would have prevented lots of people from pledging on KS.

You just can't change your funding strategy and expect people to accept it. FD would not do that, its very bad for business. But if they did go the subs route (which I doubt) I'd imagine most people would just side for the Offline single player game which is not what FD are aiming for.

FD and DB would have most certainly produced a business plan making sure that ED development would be funded without causing any damage to FD. So we should not be worried on that side. FD are safe and ED will have a long great future.

Remember ED is only one of many games which FD produce, so they do have other revenue streams.

I personally don't have an issue with MT as long as its cosmetic, because selling actual ships and weapons which can only be brought with actual money, would start a caste system, which would also put people of playing the game. I have no problem being blown out of space by a user who has worked hard to purchase a much better ship than I, But I would have an issue with somebody blowing me out the sky because they have a larger wallet than me.

What I don't understand why people are dying to throw money away, If they really have too much money then donate it so some good cause.

I must admit I would not pay for a subscription.

I do support the MT model though - provided that it does not benefit a player and is just cosmetic - such as the Bobbleheads, Decals or other items.

Frontier is a business as well so they do need money to keep them going - I just hope that if they do need to raise more funds they consider MT first.

I think that is a compelling argument and from a business perspective FD will have to consider it. I feel a subscription fee will deter most if not all casual gamers and that would be a shame, because this incredible space sim deserves to take the world by storm.

But I gather that casual gamers would be able to play the game off line without paying a subscription fee. You would miss out on the on-line experience. As far as I am concerned that might be not much of a loss at all.

Subscription is NOT the way to go to insure longevity in a game. What promotes longevity is a good community, good content. I have played MANY MMO's that were sub based and in the end they turn into a FTP system and start cutting content where you have to pay more and more amounts to continue playing.
I don't mind paying for content IF it adds quality to the game.

Hi guys, I am not sure if I have missed it in this thread or not but, is there any link or citation from someone at FD discussing their revenue model post launch at all?

Or are we simply speculating so far?

I mean, I presume that FD will want to reserve their right to do as they well please when the day comes, but it is possible they may have already dropped a few hints or preferences here or there?

Whilst I completely agree that it would be a good idea to introduce a fee, it would be hard to justify to backers as it was never mentioned during the kickstarter campaign.

Having pledged for premium beta a couple of months back myself, I'd also say that the lifelong free update policy for premium beta backers was a bad idea.

I know it's going to end on 29th but I wonder if that's enough to keep enough devs fed to continuosly release high-end updates.

Let's face it - the game is a niche game - the huge crowd will play star citizen with its third person ship view and point and click mouse aim and most people interested in ED will have a premium beta anyway already (of course that's just a wild guess).

From the Kickstarter FAQ:

Will the game be free to play after the initial purchase?
We do not plan to make it subscription-based. Once you have purchased the game up front, you will be able to play thereafter for no further cost. Everything in the game will be purchasable with in-game Credits, earned from trading, bounty-hunting, etc. We will probably allow the supplemental purchase of Credits with real money, for those who want to accelerate their progress through the game.

We do plan to charge for additional updates, to be available sometime after the original release. These will offer additional content, features and gameplay.

I don't want to dismiss your good intentions, but overall subs are unsustainable. If you want FD to give money, consider buying limited amount of cosmetics trough MT shop. Gift them to others, do whatever you want.
