I'd like to play Elite stand alone on my PC

Hi all,

New poster here.
I ran into a disagreement with Steam and subsequently deleted my account with them. I'd like to know if I can play Elite Dangerous on my PC, outwith Steam. If so, how do I do I, seeing as I no longer have a Steam account and would Frontier Developments allow me another download or am I going to have to buy Elite Dangerous again?

Thank you for your help.

Yes you can; Go to your Frontier web site store and log in. There you'll find a digital downloadable file. Prior to April this year, steamer's could download the launcher and thus by pass steam altogether, but it was nerfed. The copy you bought from steam was more than likely cheaper than the one Frontier sells, hence Frontier nerfing steamer's from utilizing the Frontier launcher. More than likely, you will have to purchase a new one, and I found out that one will have to start anew.

Thanks for your reply Cmdr Nemo LXXI.
I assumed that Frontier would have profited off of the Steam sales and had I known that they didn't really, I'd have purchased straight from them. I now have a very sour taste in my mouth with Steam and won't be using them ever again.
Again, thank you.

I dislike them also, and like your self; I'll NEVER give them another dime.
I only stay because, when I switched from xbox to pc I had to start from the beginning and I had gotten to far into it when I came to the conclusion that Steam Sucks. I asked Frontier if there would be any complications switching launcher's and they stated that though I'd have to pay, I would also have to start from the beginning again.

I have 400 hours logged on Steam, well did. I don't really mind starting again. It's quite quick to get back on track really. Just take a 300+k kill a pirate lord mission, allow yourself to be interdicted and good piloting means sticking on the back of the pirate lord, whittling down his shields and getting help from the system security to make enough money to buy a Cobra. Kit it out with Cargo racks and you should get some high paying delivery contracts. Put it this way, I restarted and within an hour I was up to 2 million credits or so.
I'm going to wait for a sale. I just checked and found the application launcher on the Elite website, but I've deleted Steam and my account.

Having started over from the beginning twice before, I can concur that for the most part. It gets easier each time. That said, it's the grind to some of the various aspects of the game; Such as getting to Admiral, King, the various Elite's status etc etc etc. After doing it twice before and now once more. I never want to do it again.

Yes I will agree. I haven't achieved Elite status and kudos to yourself for doing so. Once would be enough for me, of course, in all aspects of attaining Elite (trading, exploration, combat etc). this time around, when I purchase Elite (which I most certainly will have to now), I'll get Horizons in order to have access to planets (which I think should have been there from the start). Elite is my favourite game of all time and I remember, as a child, unwrapping my Christmas presents to see a BBC Micro 32k computer and a copy of Elite, back in 1984. I was 13 at the time. I spent hours on that game. Everything was done on the keyboard - no joysticks/gamepads back then for me. I had the paper keyboard overlay with all the commands and spent hours shipping back and forward to lava from Zaonce. This game will always have a special place in my heart. Now, much older, I don't really play many video games. Great graphics and the such, but they lack substance. Nothing but greedy corporations, trying to take as much money from people, through DLC and releasing effectively alpha titles, that people become their game's testers, paying for the privilege.

Actually, I think you will find that it depends on when you bought your game on Steam, before or after 25th April this year. They moved away from a CD-Key version that you could indeed run outside steam, the later versions are linked to your Steam account login and I don't think you can log in to the launcher just using your Frontier account details.

I could be wrong, be glad to be wrong in this case but I fear not. However if you bought before 25th April then you should have no trouble.

Your correct, I tried using the data from numerous poster's here to get it to work. And until I found out it had been nerfed, though I was a bit when it came to following directions.

... and if I had properly read your post #2 I could have not bothered typing at all - you had it covered. sorry

@Marcus7144 - even if you bought post 25 April, there is no harm in asking support for help, they might not be able to sort access for you but if you don't ask you don't get. ;)

(P.S. Note to self - click the Post Reply button - it is nice bright orange why forget to click it so often?)

Thanks for that but the problem I have is that I've deleted my Steam account. I no longer use the mobile associated with it to use the mobile Authenticater. I therefore can't log back into Steam to re-install Elite (as I uninstalled it when I deleted Steam). I don't have a copy of Elite Dangerous and there's nowhere I can get a download of Elite Dangerous, other than the Frontier shop, which I have to pay for.
Thanks again though for the help. I'm going to just have to buy it again from Frontier, which is something I don't really want to do as I've already bought it once.
However, it can't hurt to contact Frontier and ask if they'll allow me a download, of course I'll promise to upgrade to Horizons. :)

Been there, done that, the answer was, Sorry no can do. Good luck!

Downloading the game now and I've logged in with the account created when I bought it on Steam. Great. I don't have to buy ED again.
Thanks for all your help people. Appreciated. You can find me in game as Commander Moir (I think). :):):)
Sweet!

Just deleted Steam this morning.
My ED was purchased before I downloaded Steam, is not linked, so not an issue for me.
Suddenly Steam started interfering with other things on my PC, controller, etc.
So they can do one. (y)

How did you purchase ED prior to downloading and installing Steam? Where did you purchase it, if not from from if not Steam.
I know that the steam login and email can be the same as Frontier. Once in you have to download and install Frontier's launcher. I've done that and afterwards when utilizing it, it sends a code to my email and because I didn't purchase it from Frontier, I get a message via the launcher that states I have to buy it.

If you can access the game after you downloaded the launcher from Frontier without paying, I'd like to know how you did it.

Had enough of Steam. I got banned from the Spacelords forum because I disagreed with the moderator, which fell under arguing with the moderator. The moderator had nothing to do with Steam and a developer from the Spacelords company. The post was completely correct in all it stated. No insults, perfectly civil, but just criticised the game. I appealed to Steam. They wouldn't overturn the decision. I told them, if they're going to promote forum bullying, I had no option but to leave and cancel my account. One of the reasons, out of many, Spacelords is dying, is incredible authoritarianism on their own forums. They banned loads of people simply for disagreeing with their game mechanics, not foul language, threatening behaviour, deliberate thread hijacking, for disagreeing. Lol
And now Steam allow one of their team full moderating privileges on their forum. Absolute madness.
Been with Steam for quite a few years. Will never go back.

I simply followed the instructions from Strontium Dog above and it asked me to log in with my email and password, I registered the game on Steam with and the game began to download. It still is and I'll let you know the outcome when it's finished.
