I'd like to play Elite stand alone on my PC

How did you purchase ED prior to downloading and installing Steam? Where did you purchase it, if not from from if not Steam.
I know that the steam login and email can be the same as Frontier. Once in you have to download and install Frontier's launcher. I've done that and afterwards when utilizing it, it sends a code to my email and because I didn't purchase it from Frontier, I get a message via the launcher that states I have to buy it.

If you can access the game after you downloaded the launcher from Frontier without paying, I'd like to know how you did it.

As long as it was purchased before April 25 you have no issues logging-in to the launcher with your Frontier Store login details and validating through your email account. The Steam purchases after 25 April do not have that facility, they are "no cd-key" versions and locked to logging-in via "Steam Login" on the launcher.

I have a Steam version which was a gift to me a couple of years ago - I don't even have Elite installed for that - I run a copy of the EDLaunch.exe just as for a store-bought account.

I picked up another account in the recent Steam sale for which I had to create a new Steam user - I cannot run that account without going through the "Steam Login" on the launcher. (It is a mucking-about in the noob-zone account.)

I suppose it is because Steam wants their cut of the in-game purchases.

True enough, however one must have accomplished it prior to April on or about the 25th.
I just tried again for the Nth time, but using your link. And after installing, the launcher ask for a verification code. After copy pasting the code, the launcher informs me that I must purchase it. The same as I've gotten now numerous time.

I simply followed the instructions from Strontium Dog above and it asked me to log in with my email and password, I registered the game on Steam with and the game began to download. It still is and I'll let you know the outcome when it's finished.
If it works, you apparently obtained the copy prior to April. I got it after, thus it won't work.

The game's just downloaded. I've started it and back where I was when I was playing on Steam a couple of days ago. Yes, I'm sorry I didn't state that I did buy Elite before April 25th. In fact I think it was a couple of years ago, possibly circa 2017 or so. Absolutely no problems with the game at all. It's ED, just not on Steam - FANTASTIC!!!!

I would express my feelings for Steam, but it would be more redacteds than words.

I thought as much, I've bought three copies of ED one for each the PS4 and Xbox and more recently the PC via Steam. Had I known I could have bought it from Frontier. I would have. The price difference isn't nor wasn't an issue. When I asked where to obtain a pc version, I was told by the throng of poster's, STEAM. Last time I listen to the throng.
