I'd love to play CQC! ... But.

I gave it a whirl in beta, and it seemed alright, however I'm reminded right now of why I've hardly played it at all since:

1. Every mode except deathmatch is more or less dead.
2. For the last 4 games I've tried to setup, there has always been one player at level 40+, and everyone else below level 10. These guys have win/loss ratings of 10-20, which is insane.
3. There's not even a lobby chat feature to pass the time.
4. Is there a way to communicate with your team mates? I don't know.
5. I just got booted out of a game because I couldn't connect to the match making server. Weird. I thought I was already in a game that was doing just fine and not showing any signs of instability...
6. Ranks of your team mates are not visible in match, so you can't even make informed strategic decisions of whom to support.
7. Why do we need 8 players to start a team deathmatch, when four will do just fine and would actually get a match going sooner?

I'm rather glad I did not pay for this, and that when I suggested to my friends that they try out CQC for a tenner, that they didn't pay for it either.

Also, the menu buttons do that weird thing like in the main game where if head-look is turned on, the mouse doesn't register input on them properly. Come ooooon!

Haven't been able to find a DM in months. Opened a ticket a few weeks ago, got a response : "we know there are problems, we'll fix them soon". Still not working.
Not that I really care but still ...

My words exactly OP. Although it was a blast for the few times I got in albeit short lived due to no chat for coop. It needs X-Wing style coop missions. FD have no clue about gameplay.

I did manage to get one close match of cqc, at least it was close, but I think people started getting dropped toward the end of the match as our team ended up with me and the other guy with points, and our two other team mates on nothing. In another match, I got booted halfway through due to a connection problem with the matchmaking server, but that made no sense as I was in game, with zero issues. The whole thing is a bit of a shambles, I mean just another thing off the top of my head - a supposed 'e-sport' mode that doesn't have an actual ranking system with which to compare yourself to other players. Wut? It's a bit of a shambles really, which is a shame. Especially given how crazily it has been promoted.

Yeah, I know ppl are playing it everyday. As a matter of fact, I could : I have two accounts, one will find DM in 5 mn, the other one cannot find one ever. According to FD support, this is because the toon is too highly ranked. The thing is, he is 2% into professional (no prestige). Not that high a rank. I could open a new ticket, insisting that this seems to be more an account problem than anything, but I don't care enough about CQC to waste my time on this problem.

CQC is an oddity. I assume it was put in to attract console players who might want something more simple and instant. But that just sounds derogatory to console players.

However it has it's uses when you are X-Kly from the bubble doing exploration and want a break and to shoot something.

CQC...

Another evolutionary dead end in this games development it seems. Played in beta also. I actually quite liked it, very simple tried and tested game play set in really nice looking locations that the main game could do with having. Anyway like the OP says its pretty dead even finding games in the deathmatch mode can take some doing. The little ships are good fun to throw around especially in FA off. In beta I thought the capture the flag mode was the best fun some really good tense games.

Shame its more or less dead. Elite just doesn't attract them adversarial mind set in general I think and this really doesn't appeal to the typical elite player really. Another case of FD not knowing its customer base.

Aye, it's pretty much dead mode and most likely something we won't be remembering in a year (or less). They just need to remove that rank from the main game, find use for some assets perhaps, and let it rest in peace.

CTF was one of my favourites too. It seems though that as cqc is now, there are a few very highly ranked players effectively farming newbies, who quit before they get very far. I see very few middle ranked players in games, and the high ranked players have very high win rates. If there were actually a working match maker, these guys would not have w/l ratios indicating that they win 9/10 games.

I think the sad truth is even without tech issues, nobody really cares about CQC. This will probably change as VR becomes more popular though.

Oof, nobody elected you my spokesman. I quite love CQC ever since it's been introduced and it's indeed fantastic in VR.

All of you armchair developers obsessed with "wasted resources" are hilarious. As if they are refusing to let you have penicillin or something in favor of implementing Arena. Let's not pretend it's a massive resource drain at Frontier, no matter how much hyperbole you want to toss on the fire!

I'd like to play CQC more, but given how bad the matchmaking is/lack of players/unknown wait times I usually give it a pass.
It's a shame, but without features like chat, in game queing, a que all button, or an ETA for matchmaking, I don't see it making a comeback.

My thread title wasn't sarcasm; I really, truly want to enjoy CQC. Indeed in the beta, I did - this was due in large part to the seemingly more stable matches, and greater pool of players taking part. A particularly memorable team deathmatch where the matchmaker correctly decided that my team should be one player short came down to a literally last second kill which led to a tie, and it was fantastic stuff. I also recall a 1 on 1 fight I had with another player in a game where no other players joined. Neither of us could score a kill on the other and that was not through a lack of trying. Nevertheless, CQC as it is now just does not seem to be drawing in a sufficient pool of players, and matches take very long to find, and are often comically unbalanced. I don't know if this is due to a simple lack of interest, connection issues, or something else. However, considering what the developers are trying to promote it as, I find the state I experience CQC in to be utterly baffling.

I'm sure CQC would occasionally be entertaining for short periods of time....if I could get into a match without having to wait half an hour.

The matchmaking/lobby system is definitely the linchpin of most of the woes currently. I hope this will be getting a big overhaul as part of season 2.

I care, as do others. So, not the sad truth, at all.

Coop missions would be awesome :D even little scenarios like the training missions.
