At this time, the bounty system is stupidly exploitable

Dont want your bounty? Blow up your ship. or let a friend do it and claim the bounty

The bounty system is there to identify pirates and hostiles, and ive thought of a fair way to change it to both punish them and benefit them:

There is a solution so simple I don't know why it's not been added
-
In death, bounty is added to insurance cost once
-
Insurance 1 million? 2 million bounty? 3 million rebuy cost

On death bounty is now clear but you are still considered "On Probation", and may pay 1/4 of the total original bounty to clear your name (its your own fault for not paying it off before you died, so now you've had to pay extra)
-
However because you have no official bounty, killing you is allowed but gives no bounty (that's why paying off the 1/4 of the original bounty is there, so you can pay it off and not worry), instead of saying "wanted" it will say "on probation" so players know that killing you is still allowed because you "were" wanted but doing so will yield no bounty but it will show PREVIOUS BOUNTY TOTAL AMOUNT when you scan them so you can decide what you want to do about it
-
If you choose to commit more crimes (even just a fine), your bounty will start again at 0 but you will still have the 1/4 UNCLAIMBLE bounty added when you die again which no player can claim, this is added to your next insurance claim
-
To make it better for pirates, the cost on the black market for stolen goods goes up relative to your total bounty, which would need some testing and balance but makes it so there's a reason to pirate (I am not a pirate but think they need more profits)
In addition, at pirate stations you would get a discount on goods and upgrades and ships up to a maximum of 75% off (which would need to require something like 1 billion in bounty)
-

-
Also, anyone who has EVER been on your friends list will only gain 1/4 of a bounty for killing you
-
If you decide to change ship to a sidewinder, this wont work
-
Gets in sidewinder to bypass it and kill yourself when your insurance is 7 million + 5 million bounty?
-
WRONG
-
This will give you a warning saying that this cannot be bypassed and you CANT change ship while you have a bounty

-
Problem solved, punishes them, disallows friends to exploit it and allows them to redeem themselves from accidents, gives pirates better options and costs them their ship if they act stupid

-
Whatever your vote, please leave your opinion

I'd rather see bounties over a certain level become more persistent. OK, the silly little ones you get for accidentally hitting a clean ship in a fight or shooting a pirate before your scanner officially tells you he's wanted could clear straight away but I think it's pretty rubbish that someone can act like a complete wotsit for hours and then go and pay a few grand and clear his name completely so that he's not a target for bounty hunters.
Bounties for murder should only be able to be paid off and cleared after a set period of good behaviour.

I agree. It can always happen to accidentely shoot a clean ship in a fight.

To op: I like the idea of making bountys persistent and giving some benefits for player with high bountys but I don't like the part of not being able to get in whatever ship I want. All in all a good beginning. :)

Not keen on the probation bit....You've already been killed, paid your rebuy plus the added bounty and then you're marked as a 2nd class citizen and you're likely to die again. So in effect the cost of murder is rebuy x2 plus whatever bounty you rackup.

Maybe it'd still be worth it if you could sell your loot at a sensible price.

Getting killed once is enough I feel. The rest of it sounds reasonable enough.

Doesn't a bountied player already have to pay his or her own bounty as well as any fines and insurance excess. What you proposed already exists.

Letting a friend blow you up isn't much of an exploit (non profitable) and as there is no way to tell whether it is a friend or foe that kills you there isn't anything you can do to mitigate it.

IMO the bounty systems needs to be able differentiate between pirate and psychopath and lay heavier penalties on the psychopath. Other than that it works fine.
