Horizons Idea for CMDR Creator!

Since we have a creator of cmdr , what do you think we have also the possibility to gain XPs and distribute in a skill tree ? So we could have unique characters , with specialists in beam laser beam , multi -cannon, thrusters , FSD...

Don't see the point since engineers can mod modules to gain diffrent/special/stronger effects
Having an additional character skill tree ala skyrim just wont really fit in Elite

Just my 2 cents

I could possibly see stats like that when/if FPS mode comes. Not opposed to the idea, but I'd prefer to see modifiable weapons over character traits in this game.

False dichotomy? (though I think I know what you're getting at)

I don't know if I know what you think he's getting at ( :) ) but perhaps this:
In Skyrim your actual skills -I mean your skills, the guy sitting behind the screen- don't really matter as much as your characters XP and skill tree. In Elite, your skills actually mean a lot. Be it in combat (using FA-off, pips, situational awareness) or in trading (connecting the dots, logically reasoning regarding system states, economies and how you can maximize profits that way, working out what would be a good smuggling route), your own skills mean something.

You might have meant something completely different though. But anyway, yeah, no skill tree for me please.

You should know that you know what I think he's getting at [haha]

I totally understand the opposition to it, not narking on that at all. Was just the idea that ED had to be a sim and not an RPG, when the boundaries of both genres overlap and ED sits somewhere in the middle.

But yeah, not really keen on the XP thing myself. Some minor degree of customisation that was reflective of your character's backstory could be ok. Scientist? You have a basic modifier of +3 Intelligence, but -2 Strength, -1 Agility. That type of thing. I'm thinking mainly it'd apply to tertiary things like professions (if they add any kind of research/crafting) or FPS mode. Not stuff that makes your ship turn much faster or do more damage.

No I completely agree. Actually, I just expect (and hope) the cmdr creator to just be about creating a face and some clothes for yourself, perhaps a backstory, but nothing more. Nothing that influences your skillset ingame whatsoever.

In the spirit of 2.1....

I dont think XP would fit this game, no no no. I`m so tired of XP driven games, let us be different.

As much as I like skill trees, I'm going with no on this - it would ruin my immersion.
However, I wouldn't mind a set of passive proficiencies that increase with experience the more I use them.

This can work two ways:
Either,
  1. You automatically gain percentile bonuses based on your proficiency rating (E.G.: +5% bonus to weapon draw efficiency), or
  2. They introduce "The Academy" feature:

  • [*=1]ED pilots are allowed to study different aspects of ship design, from Hull to Weapons. Each aspect has sub-sections within it, for example: Hull could have "Hull Composition Theory."
[*=1]Selecting to study a particular aspect will earn the player greater proficiency experience within that aspect. I.E.: If a player is earning 1% proficiency across the board, selecting an aspect to study will boost that to 5% for that particular aspect only, the others will remain at 1%.
[*=1]Studying a particular aspect of ship design will unlock different bonuses once the required proficiency has been met. For example, studying Hull > Hull Composition Theory could unlock the ability to research "Reflective Sheeting - Due to the composite nature of Reflective Sheeting, heat dissipation is increased by 10% however, bulkheads suffused with reflective sheeting suffer a 15% loss to their overall strength," A useful tool for smugglers perhaps?
[*=1]In order to research Reflective Sheeting though, the player may need to first obtain materials and technologies from around the bubble. Once started, Research can take several days to finish, depending on the complexity of the project.
[*=1]Once the technology has been researched, the player will have unlocked the ability to apply "Reflective Sheeting" to a special bulkhead. The ability cannot be applied to other bulkheads.
[*=1]Proficiency experience and research is a long process; just as it is in real life; but the rewards are worth the investment.

Hell no. The community wants their own commanders to be as skilled as themselves in flying video games and that should remain as is. Neither do we want our skilled fighter pilot Isinona to look skilled from skill points now, do we? [down]
