Idea for PvPers... a New Combat Rating for PvP

(I think there is a C&P notoriety level, but for the purpose of this thread, it should be changed to infamy or something... )

I think there needs to be a new ranking for PvP that is separate from Combat.
This has nothing to do with whether you are lawful or criminal, this is purely combat prowess vs other players.

"What's wrong with the current Combat rating?" I hear you say. The current combat rating is a sum value and can only go up regardless of behaviour or actual skill level. It does nothing to identify skill level and is instead merely a measurement of how many NPCs one has dispatched over an immaterial amount of time.

There are nine levels as with other ranks.

  1. Toothless
  2. Mostly Toothless
  3. Recognised
  4. Noteworthy
  5. Competator
  6. Challenger
  7. Adversary
  8. Nemesis
  9. Elite

The outcome of a fight determines the amount of points one gets for that fight, but is based on the relative levels of the combatants.

Let's assume that a player initiates PvP with another player.
Relative level is the level of the opponent compared to the opponent).

Relative LevelWinnerLoser
+3+50
+2+40
+1+2-0.5
Equal+1-1
-1+0.5-2
-20-4
-3-1-5

If a player jumps out or computer accidentally disconnects for any reason, there is an automatic -1 penalty to that party.

So, looking at the above table... An Adversary (7) attacks a Challenger (6) (Relative -1)

If the Adversary wins, He will get +0.5 xp. if he loses, he will get -2 xp.

If the Challenger wins (relative +1) he will get +2 XP and if he loses, -0.5 XP.

Things get interesting if the gap is 3 levels or greater... The higher level player will lose points no matter what happens.
This is what happens to your reputation as a fighter when you surround yourself with children.

Each level has an XP threshold and if one drops some XP below that level, they are demoted to the previous level.

Any thoughts?

How many XP it takes to advance a level is arbitrary and needs testing, but that would be a game play decision

The true problem with "combat ratings" systems is the context is always missing.

It eventually ends up being just another number that people strive to increase, rather than focusing on the engagement itself being enjoyable.

In summary- the "point" of pew-pew isn't the kill, it's the adversarial competitive struggle.

Ahh cqc. I’m helpless and 0%. In main game rating? Nice idea but I would get so annoyed if moved up from toothless by simply defending myself.

There is one already. See CQC. The whole system was built for PvPers, ungrateful bunch

Was actually developed to pull newer players to ED. This is why it can be purchased separately from ED at a cheaper rate; FD were hoping people would pick up CQC, enjoy it, and pay a discounted rate for the full ED game.

So in actual fact, FD created a PvP game as a gateway to ED. Now there is an interesting snippet :)

One can make an educated guess that it never went far as no-one thinks a matchmaking screen is "content".

Right. CQC is the PvP rating separate from the main game. It could use a lot of love making it attractive to more to players. How about everyone gets a Cobra Mk III in a bigger arena?

It used to be separate. I do believe it's been discontinued as a separate product. And as it sits I have had no luck using it, unfortunately, since I haven't been able to get into a match since I started Elite over a year ago. I'd hoped to hone my combat skills with it, but it basically involves a lot of waiting and no luck.

Yeah when FD realised it has matchmaking problems no-one can live with and they won't introduce bots to fill the numbers, it's basically "end of life" for all intents and purposes. It's dead, Dave.

I used to disagree with removing the CQC rank from the main game because...well who the hell does it hurt? But as FD have basically refused to address its health, as above, it's basically dead.

Excellent suggestion.

Would also like to see CQC made into a proper esport. All it needs is in-game queuing and I'd play it all the time. /sigh

There are a group of people it does hurt, we're mostly not aware of them because it's not a well-documented feature: gaining a certain rank in CQC gets you a system permit to CD-43 11917, in which Attilius Orbital gives a steep 20% discount on ships and 30% on select modules.

I would have liked to try it out, myself.

On the note of replacing it with a specific PvP rank, I'm leery of it because given the tendency of people to equate PvP with griefing, anyone with a high rating in this proposed rank could be subjected to unfair profiling.

The CQC rank isn't a relative skill rating system either. It never goes down. It's another cumulative rank. There's an MMR but it's hidden - nobody knows what their actual rating is.

The fact that they didn't implement this for CQC indicates that there is a fat chance we will get it in the main game either, I'm afraid.

They should just change the CQC rank into a general PvP rank, then make only kills from CQC or legit kills (wanted, powerplay or crimes off) count towards it.

Main game increase modifiers should include; combat & pvp rank of the opponent, ship type destroyed and total rebuy of the opponent (to prevent friend kill-farming for rank).

All four main ranks of other players should be made available upon a basic scan too.

Edit: It should be noted that CQC already has rank levels, do we really need two exclusive rank systems for CQC?

Wouldn’t work on the general game because of the way it’s set up. It would work if there were CQC like arenas we could use regular ships in.

Perhaps we could base the rating on how quickly we can gank you!?

...like in your recent "Hi everyone, I'm back in open today - did you miss me?" thread! [big grin]

There isn’t anything in the game design that singles out PvP as a thing. The only design that identifies a human player beyond the 4th wall is the hollow icon.

Maybe if human interaction specific mechanics or gameplay were created a ranking would be relevant. (Like CQC)

PvP in main game is just players specifically targeting players because they are human controlled. The game itself doesn’t give you anything special for it or regignize a difference from NPC.

I remember Sandro talking about PvP specific benefits with PowerPlay.

But then you go down the road of mode parity and SOLO players being left out and complaining that thy don’t have a special rank.

I believe you need to prestige after rank 50 for that permit, no? Not get get to elite.
