Ideas for a quick performance boost please.

I've got an AMD FX-6300 CPU and R9 280 GPU. It's a relatively modest rig but it run ED in DK2 smoothly most of the time. I just get some slowdown and juddering in stations and roid belts. Also, it would be "icing on the cake" to run it with supersampling, but 2x makes the judder more noticeable on my system.

Any suggestions for an easy way to boost performance without spending a lot or doing major upgrades? My thoughts were
- Get a second R9 280
- Upgrade to a 290 or 295
- Upgrade to a better AMD cpu (least favoured unless upgrading the GPU is a waste of time)

Before anyone tells me, yes, I know Intel CPUs a probably better for gaming. I initially bought this as a budget gaming rig; it ran every 2014 game I tried maxed at 1080 and 60fps (apart from Arma 3). But now ED and DK2 has me hooked so I'm looking for a quick, cheap (relatively) and easy performance boost.

I don't know about AMD but I have 2 x 980s and a fast rig and I can either run at a higher res and downsample or run at native res and run supersampling 2 but not both.
for me running at native oculus res with supersampling x 2 and all settings on ultra is mainly 75fps in the asteroid belt in training and the detail of the asteroid or surfaces of planets is actually better than when i run DSR x 4 but there is some AA with native res which Im not getting using DSR which gives quite a lot of AA effects (jaggies etc) in the stations and on the cockpit :(

looks like if you are getting slow down it is probably a bottleneck somewhere or more graphic cards needed as it is possible to have steady 75fps in those settings at least 99% of the time with a powerful enough machine and/or correct settings for your machine..
Probably start by doing some research on the performance use of you machine and see what is being maxed out/under utilised

DSR x 4 with all on ultra is what I am running at, ok i get certain amount of judder in some situations but the clarity is worth it for me when its running at 75FPS which is more and more given the updates :)

Hi there! A few things to check first, in order of recommendation:

- Make sure Core parking is disabled or at least windows power management is set to 'high performance'
- Disable all other monitors while using the rift. It's a bit of a PITA to do but try it, it makes a large difference for me (GTX 970 SLI / intel rig)
- I'm assuming you have at least 4 GB of RAM and you don't have a ton of stuff hogging it up
- Check to make sure your CPU and GPU aren't hitting thermal limits while running the game. Leave realtemp in the background to check the CPU. <70C is fine, <80C should be ok. For the GPU run MSI afterburner or similar and let that monitor temp. GPU can handle higher temps - like 80-85C no problem.
- *See if you are CPU or GPU limited via overclocking.. do this only if your temps are decent above.
- *R280 is a Radeon 7850 basically. try running the core at the full 1000 mhz (should be easy) and ram at 5500 mhz instead of 5000 (+10% basically.. it might say 1250/1325 to get to those speeds)
- *FX-6300 runs from 3.5 ghz (base) to 4.1 ghz. Try running all cores at 4.3 Ghz, and see if you notice any difference..

* of course overclocking comes with risks - you could overheat components, etc. As an alternative to overclocking,

... If the 'soft tweaks' above don't help My guess is more GPU will help you.. I don't see an AMD CPU upgrade being worth it unless you go to the FX-9590 with a liquid cooler ($$$).. You still have 6 cores of AMD, Elite doesn't appear to use more than 6 cores.. and the clock speed of the other AMD chips aren't significantly higher except for the FX-9590.

R9 290X is a lot faster than the R9 280.. would recommend looking for a fire sale on one fo those if your case/power supply can handle the wattage/heat..

Good luck Commander!

The R9 280 is basically the old 7950, which is a bit faster than the 7850. That said, both are great overclockers and can easily be pushed to 1GHz on the core.
