Once you're in-game is there any way of telling whether you're in solo or open play, some line of text or anything, because if there is I'm not seeing it?

Identifying game mode

Not in game as such, it will tell you the mode you are in when you press escape and look at the options menu

Ahhhh, I see that now.... "CURRENT GAME MODE: SOLO PLAY" printed at the bottom of the screen. That'll do me, thanks.
This. Other than if you are getting ganked you are probably in open.
IIRC think if you press <ESC> (in game) it confirms which mode you are in.

Don't worry about it. You just confirmed what they said.
As soon as you press Escape there's a line at the bottom of the page saying something like "Current game mode: Open"
