Idiotic design?! (Or, Do I really need to make ten separate cargo runs to appease this engineer?)

I speak of Broo Tarquin of course. Heri Tani was bad enough with the minimum four trips necessary, and having a 60ly jump helped mitigate that tedium. But 5 stock, with a desire for 50? Why can't I just order them to be delivered? What is this absolute hot garbage?

Every other grind makes sense. Explore far out of the bubble, then go find a meta-alloy (or buy it.) Hand in a ton of bounty vouchers. KNOW a guy. Smuggle illicit goods. These things have a payoff at least. These things aren't horrendously tedious at least. Unless I get 100000% increased Trader status, I don't see how this isn't a totally useless time sink.

Well, I want lasers. Aside from getting NINE GODDAMN FRIENDS to make this run with me, which is STUPID, any suggestions on what I could do better here?

Okay, apparently after SITTING AND WAITING, 5 more have appeared, which means I only have to make four or five stupid trips back and forth!

First, rares allocations are dependent on State. That being said...

Bad design, yeah. Having to either (a) make 10 trips, or (b) get a friend to teabag you... either way it's a dumb requirement.

If you are already docked, leave the game running, and go have tea, sweep the floor, have a sandwich or watch some TV. Or anything else you need to do.

Intermittently, just pop back in, and buy the next five.

Seriously, it is really a silly requirement. Just get round it by disconnecting from the task. The lasers shall soon be yours.

I agree it would be better if FDev thought of something more fun.
For example why not allow us to buy the stuff at different locations in the system, or perhaps find someone in a neighbouring system who is willing to sell his stock for a 100% markup.

Hell, I'll buy the stock next door to Broo for 15k a pop. Isn't that the issue? That it's a rare good and meant to be profitable trade, but not exploitable? If I can sell it far away for a huge profit, why can't I buy it anywhere at a huge price difference?

EDIT: thank you all for your encouraging words and advice. I'm glad it's not just me.

Available stock of rare commodities is based to the state of the faction controlling the station the commodity is located at. If the faction is in the Boom state, then available stock will be the highest amount you're allowed to buy. For instance, Didi Vatermann's unlock commodity Lavian Brandy will have a stock of about 24 tons whenever the Workers of Lave Liberals are in a Boom, because they control Lave Station, the market where the brandy is sold. If they aren't in a Boom, the stock drops below 6 tons.

Not that I agree with the mechanic, I'm just letting you know when the best time to purchase rare commodities is.

Find a friend. Friend waits outside. You buy your allocation of fujin tea or brandy then go outside and dump it. You're friend Hoover's it up and you repeat the process until you have enough for both of you. Then fly to your destination. Your friend d dumps your half and then goes in and delivers. Later he or she pays you for the cargo with some other cargo.

It's idiotic design.

It would have been fine if bringing them some (not this many...) was part of a few special missions then engineers can send you on, but just flat out bring this ridiculous amount to me is stupid.

It's intentionally a long way away as well, to make it even worse.

That doesn't really work with rares does it? I always thought it was based on how many you already had in your cargo.

As far as i know this is correct. Each Rare has a max quantity you are allowed to carry. That's why you need to dump it into someone else's cargo bay.

Its an unlock requirement you need to do once, while it can be frustrating sure, it doesn't seem that bad at least in my book, since it is a one time deal, don't know how else they could do unlocking of engineers, you'd have to do 'something' yes?
that said you also only need to get one friend last I checked, to fun back and forth. But yeah, I personally don't know a better way to do it, it seems to be meant to be something 'rare' that you give them to gain access?

The servers are full of people who have nothing to do and would jump at the opportunity to help you if you asked. Of course, risk is involved but not much.

Out of all the engineers I have unlocked (only have three left), Broo was by FAR the worst.

155ly between him and the rares he wanted. System state only letting me buy 5......... Even with my 50ly AspX it was 3 jumps there and 4 back each trip (supercharged the FSD).

ARRRRRGGGGG!

Honestly Broo Tarquin isn't going to bother me anywhere near as much as Marco Qwent did prior to the 3.0 patch. Paying The Devil's due was frustrating enough that I gave up. Broo sounds easy by comparison.

No one who has ever unlocked all the Engineers considered this kind of stuff "FUN and ENGAGING" gameplay.

But you can take solace in the notion that a year from now, you won't care. I have unlocked all of them, and I couldn't tell you now off the top of my head what I had to do to unlock Engineer A or B or C.

It had to be done, so I went ahead and did it. Now they are all available and the grinds have faded from memory. :D

Alternatively, it's introducing you to rare trading. Take some rares, collect more on a loop, pick up more, sell them for a big profit. And as has been said, you will forget about the events unlocking this engineer in a few months.

We've had to do it, so while we sympathize, it's not the worst thing in the game you are being asked to do. For some, the need to fly 5000 lyrs is a terrible grind if they dislike exploration.
