Idle Crew! What are they good for?

Absolutely nothing!

I mean, all they do is sit around in the crew lounge sucking on your profits, but what if this were not the case, what if we could give them a reason to exist.

I can think of one, *free* ship transportation, for the price of their current wages. I mean think about it, you have a ship in system A that you want moved to system B whilst you travel to system C or bounty hunter/trade etc.

You tell your idle Crew member to do the ship move and the next time you land he or she jets off to go and get your ship, take it to where you want it, drops it off and comes back to wherever you are.

How long this process takes will depend on a few factors, how far you are away from the ships location (both original and new), how far you want the ships to be moved and just how qualified your NPC crew member is. Harmless crew members will take a lot longer than Elite crew members meaning that you get what you pay for.

The only rules to this would be quite simple

Once sent, your crew member is greyed out and cannot be fired or replaced until they have finished the job, and returned to your ship.

Crew members sent to fetch ships, still make a profit on everything you earn, only now they are earning your keep.

Timings should be comparable to what they are now, i.e. if you send a crew member from colonia to fetch your ship in the bubble and bring it to colonia it'll take as long as the current mechanic does +1 journey (your crew member has to travel to your ship). Timings are reduced by sending higher level crew (they'll pick a more suitable taxi back to your ship, and a better route to the drop off location).
If you were in the bubble and wanted to move your ship to colonia then movement times for your ship will be adjusted accordingly, though your crew member will still take that +1 journey to get back to you.

Crew can only set off and return while you are in port. We don't have interplanetary shuttles or escape pods with FSD's, this makes sense.

Damage can occur, how much depends on the level of your crew and how far your ship has to travel. It will always get to where it is going, just may get banged up if you send a harmless NPC rather than an elite one.

Ships can only be sent to known locations, where they have the facilities for landing, you couldn't send a type 7 to an outpost for example.

Finally, you can only move as many ships as you have idle crew, to move any more you have to use the current mechanic until the crew returns.

I think that just about covers it. Thoughts? (I know it's probably been suggested before).

Let the fire begin! Lol

I think this is a good idea ONLY if your NPC crew can ONLY take the ships to locations you yourself have actually been to previously

Pretty much this, but I also support the idea. Could be very handy, particularly when I'm running passengers as I could command a crew member to move my combat ship to my destination I have not yet arrived at (but have visited previously). By the time I get to the station, my crew would have already arrived...no waiting as far as I'm concerned.

Maybe consider allowing transport to CGs if not previously visited - let's you taxi in something with a better jump range.
