If Arx starship intervals continue in 3311, use a more gracious phrase such as "Premium access" or "Premier access"

The Python 2, Type-8 Transporter, Mandalay and Cobra 5 were all released in 3310 with access initially via Arx, providing both a single pre-built starship and Shipyard access¹ to get more as needed. The consistent phrase used by Frontier to announce these was Early access, and this suggestion focuses on its connotation.

In the context of those as products, their high quality and completeness upon release—or even prior, considering Partner Program members—deserves a far more polite phrase! With relatively few examples of being conducted well, the Early access notion often connotes incompleteness, ill-faith² and possible abandonment, and thus can be used to derogate a product unfairly.

Setting aside direct opinions on the matter or whether one is happy to wait instead³, the 3310 releases were all far above that level and could have been self-regarded much more highly in announcements and promotions. Premier access would be a good replacement term which describes better the temporal aspect, emphasising that the access is first or initial as opposed to early or premature. Premium access is also good; it risks hiding that temporal aspect, although it is more decent in emphasising the purchase aspect.

I think Premier access is slightly better in informing more fully that general availability will follow later, and I could not find a single-word term which implies both aspects in a literal way, only words which may imply both while bringing negative connotations of their own. Such may exist though, and would be surely better than allowing early to infer that the product is premature!

1. Despite being stated on the respective Arx store pages, some Commanders still fail to realise that buying pre-built via Arx also gives Shipyard access; this could imply a lack of clarity within Elite itself. Some are also only associating with the phrase available for credits, despite the present Shipyard access already being a much better term!
2. As opposed to small, independent studios using Early access because funding is genuinely scarce and they have at least some reputation available to stake on it.
3. I have been very pleased with buying the Python 2 access immediately, content to wait for the others, and pleased to buy Mandalay access during the Christmas discount.

I have a feeling that no matter what it is called a subset of people will complain.

While true, this was more about representing it both more accurately and reputably for those who do engage with it; they are finished products, and thus I think Frontier at least earns the moral standing to market them that way!

And the package would also include a monocle for the CMDR.

I would like to think I know many, many Commanders who would buy a monocle item separately!

Given that Commanders with only Horizons (4.0) cannot buy these ships directly from a shipyard no matter where they are in their release cycle perhaps the term should be “Access”.

As has been mentioned the non Stellar version is very much not a premium loadout in fact it is no better than what is/will be available in a shipyard.

It took me some time before I worked out your correlation of Early Access with unfinished products so it might not be as widespread an issue as you expect.

"Pay to skip delay"

(EDIT: Argueably monocles work better in VR Elite Dangerous than using both eyes, given the extant stereo discrepancies in tone mapping and orbit lines. Where can I purchase early access for completed VR support, by the way? :9)

They should just do what they do with all their other titles. DLC (new ship) comes out every 3-4 months alongside a free patch of bug fixes. If you want it you buy it. Otherwise you wait for a sale and buy it later, but a bit cheaper. Simples.

I don't care what they call it. Just let's have some more ships!
Lots more!
And if some folks inc myself choose early access then that's ok because we're putting money into Frontiers pocket, which im sure will benefit everyone associated with their games. Elite is no longer on the back burner.
Compared to the scandalous prices gamers pay for ships in that other game, I think we got off lightly.
It may not be right, I get that, but if it perpetuates elites development I'm all for it.

I would propose to call it "α-User-Test Program. Then participants are to be called "α-User-Testers". Should ARX sales go up then to be available (for some ARX) option to remove word "Tester". Such approach with α-Users for sure will choke those P2W narratives.
An α-Decal for every ARX-purchased ship should be carefully designed and available in ARX store as well.

I'd call it... You know what I really don't care because whatever name it is will still be marketing mumbo jumbo.

Call it early access, premium access, liver and onions access- it will still mean the same thing. The only thing that actually matters is if it means FDev can continue to support and develop the game, which from all accounts things seem to be pretty good at the moment. I'm certainly seeing a few less doom threads.

This kind of stuff reminds me of the old college technical writing class. The entire semester spent on writing a "all dogs must be on a lead in this park" sign. It was never right. Always some pedantic loophole one could squeeze through.

For the sign you just need a lawyer, a much bigger sign and about 50 gallons of small print ink and an ultra fine pen.
