If I buy Elite Dangerous in elitedangerous.com do I get a Steam key too?

And yes, if this game is the sort of game you will enjoy. Check out reviews and game play videos first, last thing I want to see is another player complaining they bought the game and they hate it because they didn’t understand what type of game this is. Do some research first.

Definitely do research before buying. I enjoy playing it only because I like to watch a tv show or read a book at the same time, since a lot of the time you wander in space not doing much, when trading and exploring. Bounty hunting is different though.
The game is good. BUt ya like op said check out youtubes and such.
Do you have a really good PC? If you dont have a good PC you can also get it on Xbone.
I like it on PC i have a much better system then a xbone. Plus you can use better controllers on PC.
Another cool thing check out Voiceattack for elitedangerous on youtube. Its third party voice controller its pretty kewl i think it makes the game even better.
And the game can only get better with time. The devs keep adding to the game.

You will be able to generate Steam key from your ED Store Account page. Bear in mind that if you do transfer to Steam, they will get share in profit from every digital game extras profit you buy (ship paintjobs etc. - the physical goods like t-shirts are not affected) and effectively FD will get less money.
I would recommend to do research, as the game - while being released and completely playable - is not fully fleshed out and is still being updated, fleshed out and improved upon.

No. Wait until it has a 75% discount and then play it for 10 hours. You'll have then done everything there is to do at least once. Except maybe mining, which is for masochists.
