"If I die in the game, I die in real life!" - SAO in ED

Sword Art Online is an anime about Virtual Reality MMOs, the very first arc is about 10,000 players trapped in the game Sword Art Online, unable to log out and upon death in the game will also die in the real world. The only way to escape would have been to beat the game by reaching the 100th Floor. You can find out more here.

I was curious on what you'd all think if Elite Dangerous was in such a situation? Unable to log out, mode switch, combat log, etc. How would the threat of a real and permanent death affect how people play the game? What would be the goal to be able to escape? Would you play any differently if dying in the game killed you in real life? How long would you last before going completely insane, or getting yourself killed?

Before I reply I need to know one thing. Can we gt up and walk around? D:

Oooh hmm. Well it's not exactly a feature implemented yet but it's planned.

I want to say any features announced by FD but are not actually out yet will be out when this sort of thing happens. That includes walking around stations and more landable planets, multi-crew and launched fighters.

I should possibly also mention CQC would be a safe-area arena that is accessible at several systems. You won't die there, but instead teleport out of the arena upon defeat.

Aka 'ironman' mode, simply delete your cmdr and start again if you die. On the xbox you can do this easily, just use / make a second gamertag and do it on that.

Also less spoilers about soa pls! In an outline you don't need to tell people what happens after they're stuck in the game..

But you won't die in real life upon death in game. ;)
Oh so elite is sao and we're stuck in it? Cower in the 'town of beginnings' (eravate) and rot inside a station for fear of encountering the laughing coffin gankpew crowd.

At least there'd finally be an end to combat logging, no-one would have the opportunity to try it twice.. Error would be in hogs heaven ;)

You're missing the point on this one.

In SAO players wear a headpiece called Nervegear which transports their mind into the virtual world. The device however could trigger a pulse which essentially destroys the user's brain and the game creator found a way to do just that when a character died in-game.

What Reina means is that if to play elite we had to use such a headpiece and the game creators found a way to trap our minds within the game, rigging our headpieces to destroy our brains if we die in the game; would you play differently, and how so?

I doubt my life would change much. I might go insane with power and start ganking, but idk. The fame that would come from being a pkk would be nice too. Hmm...

That's a tricky one... How would I react? Hmm...

I may have to sleep on this one.

My ship has an escape pod, some nice person recovers it and i wake up at the station with a note from my insurer that rates are going up :)

Well I wouldn't go crazy as long as I wasn't strapped to my chair all day so that's good. I basically live in the game anyway so not much change there. At the start though I'd probably stock up on some Onionhead maybe a little bit of Leestian Brandy and some chameleon cloth so that if I was ever boarded by pirates I would hide in the hold and get the jump on them. After stocking up on some essentials it's off to the stars in my conda to the abyssal plain region. Where I shall look at the many stars and listen to Hatsune Miku whilst enjoying the view. Better watch out for those neutron stars and black-holes though... feel sorry for anyone who decides a quick trip to Sag A* and ends up spaghettified.

I'd do it cmdr. Having watched all of it I'd say the risk would be worth it. Community goals on the other hand would be a lot more interesting risk wise. I enjoyed seeing this as a forum post so many reps good sir

I would just keep doing what I'm doing. I haven't died in quite awhile. If anything, I would just avoid hot zones if need be. I would probably stop canyon running though, lol. That's where a majority of my deaths came from.

If I was stuck in Elite, I wouldn't do anything to try and get out. I'd likely stay there forever.

You know what, m'dudes?

I'm with this swell guy.

If I became "trapped" in my save, well... I love my rust-bucket Cobra Mk III.

Hopefully some nice person recovers it, and not a player killer.

While I'm a player killer, if this were real.. I'd just sell your pod into slavery and make a quick buck. Although... the situation changes if you've got a juicy bounty! In all honesty, i'll just go into DayZ mode, "TRUST NO ONE"
