What services should I look for? I've already started by choosing a "base" station. And I know a pristine mining site nearby. Now the question is... What other economies should I look for in the vicinity...

I don't understand the question? You're looking for a suitable home?

Presume you are looking for a home base with desirable surrounding systems, look for.

One of each type of economy, prioritizing the one you care most for: High tech for the tech, Tourism if you like charter flights, Industrial/Refineries of you like the fetch missions.

Planetary colony economy might be interesting, but never really explore this yet.

Terraforming if you like to haul Biowaste, haha.

If I were to have the desire to map a small network of inhabited systems...

... I'd watch out for Universal Cartographic's Enforcers. They pursue free cartographers who transgress theire mapping monopoly with drakonic penalties. :p

Honestly, your question is a bit vague. What exactly do you want to achieve?

When mapping a cluster of systems, maybe also look for present player factions. An active player faction can have quite an impact on a clusters "economy of states"...

Also having a space-installation of any kind nearby is nice for flying stunts or some wing-action. A haz-res site with a decent starport nearby for some bountyhunting. What else to look for?

Maybe look where your next information broker has set up shop. Usually in populated Anarchy Systems or Low-Sec - not sure atm.

I would travel out about 3-4 stars in every direction. Make sure you have the eddb connector turned on so you can remember what is near and go with missions in that region. Without the connector you may need to go many more jumps than once you explored
