If it aint broke, don't fix it

Back in the days of the Alpha tests I commented on not to over complicate Elite Dangerous.
I played the original and loved it. Trade, Bounty Hunt, Privateer and Explore. That's all you needed to do, but the game was addictive and totally different to anything else.

Now.... Powerplay...what can I say, Why did ED expand to a new 'game within a game' when there is still a lot more to focus on within the fundamental's of Elite Dangerous.

The USP of Elite Franchise is the freedom to do what you like, go where you want.

With Power play you are tied to whomever you are pledged. you need to continually keep attaining 'merits' to either increase your rating or stop it from dropping to a lower one. Where is the freedom in that?

I would rather FD focus on more depth to the main game than have a 'loosely thought up add on' to try and pull more people in to buying the game.

More depth being, Planetary landings, walk about the stations and ships.....extend the inhabited systems to further afield and maybe introduce a new colony (or two).

I want keep Elite Dangerous uncomplicated, its more playable that way.

Well they are my thoughts anyway

You don't have to engage with it.
Just keep doing the things you like doing and ignore PP. It has exactly zero effect on anyone not engaging with it.
And even if you do sign up you're not tied to anything. You can give your faction the finger at any point and go do something else.

Don't get too struck on planetary landings. What are you going to do there anyway? It'll be space to explore sure but if they rush that feature into release you can bet it'll be some time before there's any meaningful content introduced. And just how much moaning, pouting, and whining do you think there'll be from the peanut gallery then?
Same goes for walking about your ship. To do what exactly? See what the toilets look like? They look like toilets with LEDs. Woo hoo.

If you want ED to be uncomplicated then don't play the complicated game.
Stick to doing what you enjoy, ignore the political nonsense, carry a big stick, and be about your game.
Play the simple game. That's what I'm doing. I'm not interested in the politics. Perhaps in the future, or for some specific reason possibly, that may change. But for now I'm too busy building up my funds trading and bounty hunting so that I can equip myself to the level I require for me to be able to start playing my game in Elite: Dangerous.

Just logged in and played 1 hour of ED.

Didn't join PP, I am just outside any PP territory, on fringes of human space. Just jumping around, taking bounty kill here and there, doing some trade missions with my Cobra.

What politics? Don't care. Read GalNet news, good tabloid material :)

The point the OP is making is not that PP is bad or good (this topic is whole different can of worms). It's that Frontier are dedicating resources to to adding on non-essential extras to the game (extras which add little depths) while the core concepts of the game remain unfinished.

PP is basically 1st tier NPCs from persistent NPC list. Powers also impact background sim heavily, and it also adds actual presence of NPCs flying around, etc. It makes galaxy alive.

Call it it non-essential just because you "don't see it" is a bit arrogant, isn't it? Doesn't mean there are no things to add - in opposite - but there's no point of trashing PP.
