Elite / Frontier If Modern Warfare can do it (with Activision's massively abundant resources - ahem)...

It goes without saying that a large number of players would reject out of hand any idea that might see Frontier Developments diverting resources away from the core Elite Dangerous project.

With that said, some of us have a liking for tasty little extras, and don't mind the occasional side project.

So bearing all that in mind - and I'm not pretending this is a new idea: Hey, Frontier! Any chance that you could graphically and... um... soundically... re-master Frontier: Elite II? Or better yet, First Encounters? I have no idea how much of an undertaking this would be - but I can't be the only one that'd pay good money (within reason) for it. I'm not asking for masses of new content, or indeed any new content: I'd take the same galaxy, the same mission types, the same everything. But I would metaphorically kill for an update of FE2 with reasonably modern graphics. Higher-resolution terrain textures, a decent skybox, ship and station/city models and lighting just somewhere vaguely in the same ballpark as ED...?

I'd pay you money, and I promise I wouldn't stop playing ED...

Everso pretty please?

Pleasepleaseplease?

Please?

While re-masaters can be a good and welcome thing they can also hurt your current line of of software. You mention Activision and CoD... Look at all the players wanting just the remaster of modern warfare and not interested in the slightest about the new game which non of them wanted based on the trailer feedback - Not everyone hated but pretty much the overall majority did.

If Frontier were to re-master FE2 then there would also be calls for it to be available in OPEN or at least have modes similar to ED... With all the work required to transform FE2 into a game worthy of release today there would be a lot of time and expense needed. In my opinion it would be easier to get the content shoehorned in ED but then we would not be taking part in a new story would we?

I like many others have enjoyed Elite in it's various guises but I'm all for moving forward, not just with how the game looks but with the story we are involved in. There are of course player based projects that are doing a good job with the older games such as Oolite http://www.oolite.org/ which may scratch your itch for nostalgic gameplay :)

Do you know about the Russian project to re-vamp FFE? Search for FFED3D. It's tricky to get to work, but does re-texture the entire game. Unfortunately they stopped work on it just before Elite Dangerous kickstarter was announced.

That's certainly true. But Activision did a Bad Thing, I think, in offering the remaster but then making it contingent on buying the new CoD which, as you say, not many people were wanting in the first place - so it came over as an underhanded trick to kind of blackmail people into buying something they didn't really want in order to get access to something they did.

Whereas with FD, who aren't underhanded and are in fact just lovely people, every last one of them, it'd be a separate release, for a nominal standalone price, for a graphically tarted-up but otherwise exactly-the-same-as-it-was remaster of FE2. So:

Not from me! :) I play Solo exclusively in ED and never wanted multiplayer in the first place, but I accept that all things must eventually give way to the multiplayer ethos. And that's fine - but as I say, what I'd like to see would be a simple re-release of FE2 made a bit prettier, and bit higher-res, and a bit smoother than when I last saw it. No Open, no Group, just Solo. True, genuine, offline Solo, as FE2 always was.

With all the work required to transform FE2 into a game worthy of release today there would be a lot of time and expense needed.
It would take some resources, and I'd gladly admit I'm not a programmer, so I've no idea whether a reasonable remaster could be done without seriously impacting on the progress of ED. But if there's a logic to this beyond just "I want it" (which I admit would be my primary motivation) it's that it could be a little bit of a moneyspinner that might help raise a little more revenue as a side project that could then be channelled into ED. Obviously that would depend on whether the balance could be made right: sell the remaster at a price that's reasonable for people to afford on a whim but still makes enough extra to make it contribute to the primary ED project.

As for new stories, well, that's pretty much the appeal of FE2 and FFE: you make your own. The game's just the trigger for the imagination.

Oolite's great, but at the risk of seeming fussy it's all the bits of Elite that don't appeal to me. :p I want the Newtonian mechanics, proper orbits and such. Like in Pioneer - a sort of definitely-not-a-remake of FE2. And I love Pioneer but some while ago they removed all the Frontier content, ships, stations, etc, they'd been using, as a gesture of goodwill to FD - which is great! But... it does make the world seem a lot less familiar; and I do miss my old Asp. :p

Always loved the cartoon-like FE2 graphics - even in comparison to ED. Would settle for just higher res.

There's always Pioneer or Jumpdrive
There is. I love Pioneer. Haven't tried Jumpdrive. Will have a look for it.

Yep - had a bash with FFE3D too, and it was a dashed good piece of work. But... I dunno. For all the things in ED I can whinge about not being quite right for me personally (clearly the most important consideration for any game developer, I'd have thought... Ahem... :p), the bits I really love are the graphics and the sound. I cannot fault ED at all for its presentation. If FD were to ask me, I'd tell them that I would gladly consider paying a AAA price (No Man's Sky kind of money) for a new release of FE2 or FFE with something even approaching ED's graphics standard. That said, that's just me: a lower price point would probably attract more sales and make the whole thing more than just FD catering to me.

Although, you know, if they could do that, that'd be just spiffing. :D

I'd pay top dollar for a decent Frontier reskin, definitely. I have no interest in ED with its speed-limited submarines. I'm still playing FFED3D, but prefer FE2's more consistent interface - switching the F-keys to modifiers in FFE was a bad design choice. FE2 touched up, with full thruster mapping (like JJ's FFE etc.) would be the best Xmas present i could wish for..

Even if they just released an updated model pack for AJ's FFED3D, they'd completely redeem themselves in my eyes..! (Or even just the few models still in need of updating - the Mk1 Cobra, the Krait, Gecko and Moray etc. Just a few measly breadcrumbs..?)

ETA: a brief reminder of why Frontier 1 & 2 stand head and shoulders above anything ED has to offer:

Agree 100%. I was hoodwinked into supporting ED, and have no interest in it (having tried to give it a go). I'm still waiting for Elite IV.
