If this is new, i like it..

Was decimating Brians Thugs again last night in a high rez and it was getting very busy with 4 sets of 3 winged cops and countless pirates and miners all in my vicinity and I was targeting an Asp and I accidentally grazed a cop (he was in a viper) with my size 4 beam and immediately decided to get out of dodge before they all turned red but, a message came through from the cop saying something like "Watch your target Commander" .. and carried on and killed my target whilst I floated there thinking any second now I am going to be their most wanted..

but they and/or he, forgave my unintentional chaff disorientated size 4 beam lazer hit on his Viper!
That has never happened to me before and I like it!!
leniency is good.

This feature has been around a while, so long I can't remember when it was introduced. But you don't come across it often because accidents like this are relatively rare.

There may be a feature that if you are killing thugs alongside the cops, you gain rep with them and they forgive you a minor graze. However, if you happened to hit one when he first turned up, it would probably be red triangles all over your radar.

It isn't new; it's been around since I've started playing, back in the 1.3 days. The main problem is, most CMDRs fly around with seriously overpowered weapons, with which a single shot (or for the case of beamers, a fraction of a second of contact) is usually enough to push you over the damage threshold from "I'll give 'em a warning " to "I'll assume that was deliberate - all units open fire!".

Yeah, pretty sure it was in recent patch notes about increasing the tolerance. Had the same thing last night, sure I would have been enemy#1 before!

Their reaction depends on the friendliness u got with them...

2 days ago i was in a high rez zone and accidentally did that several times and no problem, since i was allied with the systems faction (normally they appear as green to u when u select them as targets), but in another incident, just him passing on the laser and getting a hit made me had to run and go to interstellar to clear my sheet, cause i wasnt allied with them (orange as u target them), so it will be up to the system in place and the RNG if u get trouble or not.

It also matters if you are targetting something or not.

If you are not targetting them, the damage leniency is massively high.

If you target them and fire, then I think there is just, zero leniency - which makes sense.

Yep, the threshold of damage a NON TARGETED (that's the critical thing) ship will take before being hostile was increased dramatically in 3.3.
