If you could change/add One thing about/to exploration...

What would it be? I'm curious as to what some of our more seasoned explorers would want to change or add to the profession.

A get me back to the bubble button.

There are times where once I've reached my destination, I can't be       to do the long slog home.

Changing the Scout class ships to have better jump range than the Explorers.

Explorers should have the IC capacity to do in depth exploration, scouts should be able to jump further because they are less laden.

This

Well thought out, meaningful exploration missions.

Not just the "bring your honk results here" CG type of thing.

and this

Ai either to have a reason to harass explorers, or for them to stop doing so.

- and posibbly combined.

"We are considering an long-term investment in a deep-space mining venture in (system/region/sector name). Please provide us with detailed scans of at least five metallic rings in that area, but beware that our competitors might have hired some… private contractors to make your life difficult."

"Our congregation of disciples of the Star Steed is looking for a way to rejoin our heavenly protector. We are looking for a system within the Horsehead Nebula that contains an ELW as well as pristine metallic reserves. We have had a… revelation… that one of these five systems might fulfill these criteria. However… the source of this revelation might disprove of our venture. Please take care".

I'd add surface exploration mechanics, just some sort of process whereby a planet's surface can be explored that would provide a reason to spend extended periods scouring a planet's surface beyond surveying nodes, and that would generate data sellable to UC that would have a comparable time:value ratio to jump\honk\jump\honk exploration (if the rock itself is valuable enough). Not looking for something that would make me rich, or would be so lucrative that explorers would feel they were losing out on money if they didn't cart an SRV along. All I'd really want out of it would be for planetary landings to not halt exploration income.

It would be fantastic if such a mechanic encouraged exploring multiple landing sites, exploration of canyons, diving into super large craters, etc etc.

Exploration data saved in an indestructible black box!
So if a stupid npc pirate kills you for the LOLZ at the end of a long trip, you can retrieve it...

Detailed surface scanning in low orbit, so I feel like I'm actually going to a world and gathering detailed data about it. This should be coupled with missions to go to these systems and scan them.

This has been suggested several times in the past. The problem with it is that if you can retrieve it then so can another CMDR. And, specifically, the NPC who just killed you can. So we've gone from NPCs interdicting and killing explorers for no possible reason to NPCs targeting explorers because there is a legitimate reason for doing so.
