If you could turn back time (and change animals/dlc)

Difficult question, BUT

IF you were the God of Planet Zoo, and YOU got to turn back time and made all the animal choices for the game, WHAT would planet zoo have looked like?

What changes would you have made to the animal list?

What DLC changes would you have made? What free animals would you have given.

BUT, there is a twist, you can only change animals from the current game, you can’t ADD more animals, you can only work with the number of animals that the real game has, so!

Himalayan Brown Bear into American Black Bear = GOOD
Adding an Saiga ONTOP of the number of animals of a pack is wrong, you can change Saiga in for the Thompsons gazelle for example and so on.

Let me start to give the right example. I will ignore most Exhibit animals, only ones that I’m gonna replace I mention.

This thread is...
...strange. If you want to know my honest opinion and if I had control of PZ roster, there wouldn't be a 2nd monitor species. I'd also be lighter on the reptiles in general and monkeys as well sorry. So its a good thing I DON'T have control over it. and at least I recognize it. Please, Frontier don't remove any animals from the game. Slight changes maybe (like Himalayan Brown Bear to European) might be a bit ok. but, the second Frontier "improves" the status quo by changing things, the second I stop supporting them (i.e. no more buying DLCs, if they changed one of my favorite animals for a different one I'd ask for a refund of the edited DLC even). Fortunately this is hypothetical.

I wouldn’t change anything, but if I could I would make scenery packs 8 animals and animal packs 16 animals. I feel like if this happened we would have got more of the birds, monkeys, reptiles, and other non-mammals we have been severely lacking with each dlc.

Here Goes:

Base Game:

Timber Wolf --> Red Wolf
Himalayan Brown Bear --> Polar Bear
Nile Monitor --> Red Kangaroo
Formosan Black Bear --> Himalayan Black Bear
Bengal Tiger --> Sumatran Tiger

Arctic Pack

Polar Bear --> Musk Ox
Dall's Sheep --> Arctic Fox

South America Pack

Animal Selection is fine.

Australia Pack

Red Kangaroo --> Common Wombat

Aquatic Pack

Grey Seal --> Harbor Seal

SEA Animal Pack

Proboscis Monkey --> Crested Macaque

Africa Pack

Animal Selection is fine.

NA Animal Pack

Arctic Fox --> American Mountain Goat

Europe Pack

Animal Selection is fine.

Wetlands Animal Pack

Spectacled Caiman --> Nile Crocodile
Wild Water Buffalo --> Domestic Water Buffalo

Conservation Pack

Animal Selection is fine.

Twilight Pack

Common Wombat --> Short-Beaked Echidna

Grassland Animal Pack

Animal Selection is fine.

Tropical Pack

Animal Selection is fine.

What would your changes be? Do you agree with mine? Do you hate mine? Let me know in the comments.
I'd be pretty unhappy with many choices, as you omitted/cut out some of my favorites 😅
On a technical note: penguins shouldn't be in the Arctic dlc, as they only live in the Antarctic 😉

How I would have done it, while keeping the DLC themes and number of animals:

→ = "replaces"

Base game:

African savannah elephant
Plains zebra
Hippopotamus
Ring tailed lemur
Reticulated giraffe
Western chimpanzee
African wild dog
Cheetah
Saltwater crocodile
Springbok
Spotted hyena
Common ostrich
Common warthog
Okapi
Gharial
Pronghorn
Aardvark
Mandrill
Baird's tapir
Gemsbok
African buffalo
Red panda
Western lowland gorilla
Sable antelope
Nile monitor
Bongo
Chinese pangolin
Greater flamingo
Giant panda
Japanese macaque
Red ruffed lemur

Grey wolf→Timber wolf
Wisent→American bison
Greater kudu→Nyala
Emu→Siberian tiger
Hamadryas baboon→Bonobo
Red fox→Formosan black bear
Eurasian brown bear→Himalayan brown bear
Red necked wallaby→Indian elephant
Ocelot→Snow leopard
Bighorn sheep→Aldabra giant tortoise
Musk ox→Indian rhinoceros
Fallow deer→Galapagos Giant tortoise
Dromedary→Bactrian camel
Squirrel monkey→Bornean orangutan
Blue wildebeest→Black wildebeest
Golden pheasant→Indian peafowl
Sumatran tiger→Bengal tiger
North American black bear→Grizzly bear
African lion→West African lion

I am changing a whole bunch of base game animals and replacing them either with a DLC animal or with animals that make for a more rounded base game. Now, whichever part of the world you want to make a small section for, you can. Whether that be Europe (fallow deer, red fox, wisent, wolf), Australia (wallaby, emu, saltwater croc), South America (baird's tapir, squirrel monkey, ocelot), North America (pronghorn, NA black bear, bighorn sheep, red fox, wolf). The roster favors European animals a little more than NA animals, because NA gets a whole animal pack later on.
No longer are there two tigers, two brown bears, chimp/bonobo. I only left the maki/lemur because they go together so nicely. There is only one tiger, the Sumatran. Only the chimp. I removed the tortoises, and the Galapagos makes its entry in the Islands pack later.
I removed some showstopping animals that seemed like they would make great headliners for a DLC, such as the orangutan, grizzly bear, North American bison, Indian elephant, Indian rhinoceros.
I added some 'plain' and 'common' animals that seemed like they would make great base game additions, such as the emu, squirrel monkey, fallow deer, bighorn sheep, wisent, red fox, wallaby. It satisfies people's needs for a certain region and certain types of animals, but leaves a taste of wanting more. The wisent is there, but the American bison speaks to the imagination! A wallaby yes, but we need a kangaroo! And the African elephant is there, but what about the Indian elephant?! :D :p

Gifts:
Year 2: Asiatic black bear→Black and white ruffed lemur
Year 3: Black rhinoceros→Red deer

Deluxe:
Am only changing the Thomson's gazelle, because I think the deluxe needs to have some really special animals. The pygmy hippo and the komodo dragon are just that. And instead of the Thomson's gazelle you will now get a different but very unique ungulate in the Saiga antelope. I would really have preferred a larger deluxe roster, but I have to abide by the rules ;)

Komodo dragon
Saiga→Thomson's gazelle
Pygmy hippopotamus

Arctic pack:
I love the sheep, but feel the arctic hare fits better. I put the bighorn sheep in the base roster to replace the dall. The arctic fox replaces the arctic wolf, which is a subspecies of the grey wolf which is already in game.

Polar bear
Reindeer
Arctic hare→Dall sheep
Arctic fox→Arctic wolf

South America pack:
Replaced the llama for a wild llama, and the frog is replaced by the beautiful boa.

Guanaco→Llama
Jaguar
Giant anteater
Capuchin monkey
Emerald tree boa→Red eyed tree frog

Australia pack:
This pack is good as is. The emu came in the base roster, and the devil will come later on.

Red kangaroo
Dingo
Cassowary
Koala

Aquatic pack:
Replaced the king penguin for the in my opinion more charismatic African penguin, and of course here goes the popular small clawed otter.

African penguin→King penguin
Grey seal
Asian small clawed otter→Giant otter
Cuvier's dwarf caiman

Southeast Asia animal pack:
This pack needs a star animal, and it gets one with the orangutan.

Bornean orangutan→Proboscis monkey
Dhole
Clouded leopard
Sun bear
Malayan tapir
Binturong
Babirusa

Africa pack:
This pack came with a North African building style, so I added another North African animal to go with the theme.

White rhinoceros
Meerkat
Fennec
Scimitar horned oryx→African penguin

North America animal pack:
Added the grizzly bear and bison, which makes this a magnificent North America pack in my opinion.

Moose
Cougar
California sea lion
Grizzly bear→Arctic fox
American bison→Prairie dog
Beaver
American alligator

Europe pack:
The quintessential European deer is the red deer, so it replaces the fallow, which is now in the base roster.

Red deer→Fallow deer
Eurasian lynx
European badger
Alpine ibex

Wetlands animal pack:
Wetlands is an ideal excuse to add waterfowl, so I added a swan and a duck. No preference for swan species, so you can fill that in for yourself. Replaced the crane. Small clawed otter moves to Aquatic.

Capybara
Grey crowned crane→Red crowned crane
Platypus
Wild water buffalo
Nile lechwe
Swan→Asian small clawed otter
Mandarin duck→Spectacled caiman

Conservation pack:
Przewalski horse
Wild bactrian camel→Scimitar horned oryx
Siamang
Amur leopard

Twilight pack:
Replaced the red fox, which is in the base roster, with the devil which suits the spooky theme.

Striped skunk
Common wombat
Tasmanian devil→Red fox
Raccoon

Grasslands animal pack:
The emu, wallaby and blue wildebeest are in the base roster, so here come the rhea, mara, and blackbuck.

Maned wolf
Caracal
Greater rhea→Emu
Nine banded armadillo
Striped hyena
Patagonian mara→Blue wildebeest
Blackbuck→Red necked wallaby

Tropical pack:
I didn't like the choices here, so I added a cool South American monkey, a coati, and civet.

Spider monkey→Lar gibbon
Coatimundi→Fossa
African civet→Asian water monitor
Red river hog

Future DLCs:

Islands animal pack:
Here come the Galapagos giant tortoise and fossa.

Galapagos giant tortoise
Fossa
Tree kangaroo
Manatee
Pelican
Kiwi
Green sea turtle
Coconut crab

India animal pack:
See how cool an Indian pack could have been, with the Indian rhino, elephant, and peafowl.

Indian rhinoceros
Indian elephant
Indian peafowl
Nilgai
Indian giant squirrel
Indian muntjac
Lion tailed macaque

Highlands animal pack:
Here is the snow leopard.

Snow leopard
Spectacled bear
Takin
Wolverine
Mountain goat
Yak
Viscacha

==========
Lost forever: I really have nothing against these animals, but I think with limited slots in game there were better options.

How I would have done it, while keeping the DLC themes and number of animals:

→ = "replaces"

Base game:

African savannah elephant
Plains zebra
Hippopotamus
Ring tailed lemur
Reticulated giraffe
Western chimpanzee
African wild dog
Cheetah
Saltwater crocodile
Springbok
Spotted hyena
Common ostrich
Common warthog
Okapi
Gharial
Pronghorn
Aardvark
Mandrill
Baird's tapir
Gemsbok
African buffalo
Red panda
Western lowland gorilla
Sable antelope
Nile monitor
Bongo
Chinese pangolin
Greater flamingo
Giant panda
Japanese macaque
Red ruffed lemur

Grey wolf→Timber wolf
Wisent→American bison
Greater kudu→Nyala
Emu→Siberian tiger
Hamadryas baboon→Bonobo
Red fox→Formosan black bear
Eurasian brown bear→Himalayan brown bear
Red necked wallaby→Indian elephant
Ocelot→Snow leopard
Bighorn sheep→Aldabra giant tortoise
Musk ox→Indian rhinoceros
Fallow deer→Galapagos Giant tortoise
Dromedary→Bactrian camel
Squirrel monkey→Bornean orangutan
Blue wildebeest→Black wildebeest
Golden pheasant→Indian peafowl
Sumatran tiger→Bengal tiger
North American black bear→Grizzly bear
African lion→West African lion

I am changing a whole bunch of base game animals and replacing them either with a DLC animal or with animals that make for a more rounded base game. Now, whichever part of the world you want to make a small section for, you can. Whether that be Europe (fallow deer, red fox, wisent, wolf), Australia (wallaby, emu, saltwater croc), South America (baird's tapir, squirrel monkey, ocelot), North America (pronghorn, NA black bear, bighorn sheep, red fox, wolf). The roster favors European animals a little more than NA animals, because NA gets a whole animal pack later on.
No longer are there two tigers, two brown bears, chimp/bonobo. I only left the maki/lemur because they go together so nicely. There is only one tiger, the Sumatran. Only the chimp. I removed the tortoises, and the Galapagos makes its entry in the Islands pack later.
I removed some showstopping animals that seemed like they would make great headliners for a DLC, such as the orangutan, grizzly bear, North American bison, Indian elephant, Indian rhinoceros.
I added some 'plain' and 'common' animals that seemed like they would make great base game additions, such as the emu, squirrel monkey, fallow deer, bighorn sheep, wisent, red fox, wallaby. It satisfies people's needs for a certain region and certain types of animals, but leaves a taste of wanting more. The wisent is there, but the American bison speaks to the imagination! A wallaby yes, but we need a kangaroo! And the African elephant is there, but what about the Indian elephant?! :D :p

Gifts:
Year 2: Asiatic black bear→Black and white ruffed lemur
Year 3: Black rhinoceros→Red deer

Deluxe:
Am only changing the Thomson's gazelle, because I think the deluxe needs to have some really special animals. The pygmy hippo and the komodo dragon are just that. And instead of the Thomson's gazelle you will now get a different but very unique ungulate in the Saiga antelope. I would really have preferred a larger deluxe roster, but I have to abide by the rules ;)

Komodo dragon
Saiga→Thomson's gazelle
Pygmy hippopotamus

Arctic pack:
I love the sheep, but feel the arctic hare fits better. I put the bighorn sheep in the base roster to replace the dall. The arctic fox replaces the arctic wolf, which is a subspecies of the grey wolf which is already in game.

Polar bear
Reindeer
Arctic hare→Dall sheep
Arctic fox→Arctic wolf

South America pack:
Replaced the llama for a wild llama, and the frog is replaced by the beautiful boa.

Guanaco→Llama
Jaguar
Giant anteater
Capuchin monkey
Emerald tree boa→Red eyed tree frog

Australia pack:
This pack is good as is. The emu came in the base roster, and the devil will come later on.

Red kangaroo
Dingo
Cassowary
Koala

Aquatic pack:
Replaced the king penguin for the in my opinion more charismatic African penguin, and of course here goes the popular small clawed otter.

African penguin→King penguin
Grey seal
Asian small clawed otter→Giant otter
Cuvier's dwarf caiman

Southeast Asia animal pack:
This pack needs a star animal, and it gets one with the orangutan.

Bornean orangutan→Proboscis monkey
Dhole
Clouded leopard
Sun bear
Malayan tapir
Binturong
Babirusa

Africa pack:
This pack came with a North African building style, so I added another North African animal to go with the theme.

White rhinoceros
Meerkat
Fennec
Scimitar horned oryx→African penguin

North America animal pack:
Added the grizzly bear and bison, which makes this a magnificent North America pack in my opinion.

Moose
Cougar
California sea lion
Grizzly bear→Arctic fox
American bison→Prairie dog
Beaver
American alligator

Europe pack:
The quintessential European deer is the red deer, so it replaces the fallow, which is now in the base roster.

Red deer→Fallow deer
Eurasian lynx
European badger
Alpine ibex

Wetlands animal pack:
Wetlands is an ideal excuse to add waterfowl, so I added a swan and a duck. No preference for swan species, so you can fill that in for yourself. Replaced the crane. Small clawed otter moves to Aquatic.

Capybara
Grey crowned crane→Red crowned crane
Platypus
Wild water buffalo
Nile lechwe
Swan→Asian small clawed otter
Mandarin duck→Spectacled caiman

Conservation pack:
Przewalski horse
Wild bactrian camel→Scimitar horned oryx
Siamang
Amur leopard

Twilight pack:
Replaced the red fox, which is in the base roster, with the devil which suits the spooky theme.

Striped skunk
Common wombat
Tasmanian devil→Red fox
Raccoon

Grasslands animal pack:
The emu, wallaby and blue wildebeest are in the base roster, so here come the rhea, mara, and blackbuck.

Maned wolf
Caracal
Greater rhea→Emu
Nine banded armadillo
Striped hyena
Patagonian mara→Blue wildebeest
Blackbuck→Red necked wallaby

Tropical pack:
I didn't like the choices here, so I added a cool South American monkey, a coati, and civet.

Spider monkey→Lar gibbon
Coatimundi→Fossa
African civet→Asian water monitor
Red river hog

Future DLCs:

Islands animal pack:
Here come the Galapagos giant tortoise and fossa.

Galapagos giant tortoise
Fossa
Tree kangaroo
Manatee
Pelican
Kiwi
Green sea turtle
Coconut crab

India animal pack:
See how cool an Indian pack could have been, with the Indian rhino, elephant, and peafowl.

Indian rhinoceros
Indian elephant
Indian peafowl
Nilgai
Indian giant squirrel
Indian muntjac
Lion tailed macaque

Highlands animal pack:
Here is the snow leopard.

Snow leopard
Spectacled bear
Takin
Wolverine
Mountain goat
Yak
Viscacha

==========
Lost forever: I really have nothing against these animals, but I think with limited slots in game there were better options.
==========
Bengal tiger, Siberian tiger, timber wolf, nyala, bonobo, Formosan black bear, Himalayan brown bear, Aldabra giant tortoise, black wildebeest, west African lion, black&white ruffed lemur, Thomson's gazelle, dall sheep, arctic wolf, red eyed tree frog, king penguin, giant otter, proboscis monkey, prairie dog, red crowned crane, spectacled caiman, lar gibbon, Asian water monitor.

==> Maybe in a future pack?
Llama, perfect for a domestic pack.
I would be very SA without king penguin and red crowned crane. I feel like their staple zoo animals. Also the game would feel so incomplete without at least one Antarctic animal.

I tried to occupy the niche by similar animals or at least some that would require a similar amount of work (even tought that's probably very hard to tell).

Honestly it seems wrong to put the blue wildebeest in the base game because that would make it look so bad compared to the beautiful and great models that we currently have, on the other hand the animals like the gibbon and animals that dive in the base game would be impossible, that's why they came out in the future without further ado, let's play this what if :)

Base Game
  • Formosan black bear - Asian black bear
  • Nyala - Greater Kudu
  • Timber wolf - Grey wolf in general ( in this what if the wolf would had the arctic wolf model and white variants)
  • West African lion - Northen lion
  • Aldabra Giant Tortuise - Bighorn Sheep
  • Goliath beatle - King Kobra
  • Greater Flamingo - American Flamingo
  • Black Wildebeest - Blackbuck
Deluxe
  • Thomson's gazelle - Giant Aanteater
Arctic pack
  • Arctic wolf - Arctic fox
  • Dall Sheep - Musk ox
South America pack
  • Llama - guanaco
  • Giant Aantear - Greater Rhea
Australia pack
Is fine :)
Aquatic pack
  • King penguin - Empeor Penguin ( just look at their babies)
  • Cuvier's dwarf caiman - spectacled caiman
  • Giant Otter - Sea otter
Southeast Asia animal pack
Proboscis Monkey - Lowland Anoa

Africa pack
Another fine to me

North America animal pack
  • Arctic fox - Red fox
Europe pack
A so good pack IMO

Wetlands animal pack
  • Spectacled caiman - Water Monitor
Conservation pack
My favorite :)

Twilight pack
  • Red Fox - Tasmanian Devil
  • Skunk - Eye Eye (sorry for my skunk but this would be for the community welfere)
Grasslands animal pack
The blue wildebeest will be a good star with no controversials

Tropical pack
  • Asian water monitor - Gaur
  • Lar gibbon - Howler Monkey

So the animals that sadly would not be in the game
1.- Niala
2.- Thompson's Gazelle
3.- Probosquis Monkey
4.- King Penguin
5.- Dwarf Caimán
6.- Giant Otter
7.- Aldabra Giant Tortoise
8.- American Flamingo
9.- Llama
10.- Arctic Wolf
11.- Dall Sheep
12.- Gibbon
12.- Skunk

All the animals exept the skunk were remplaced by animals similiars or the Same genus
I like how Is the animal roster actually I would not change anything :)

Coming back to this. I feel like Frontier did a real good job on most DLC's, but as of lately I feel like some animals that were left out of DLC's are a missed opportunity so I questioned: what would your DLC lineup be with the current pack concepts.
Mine would be:
