if you die when exploring, do you lose all?

do you lose all the exploring you had, kinda like bounties, if you die without turning in bounties you lose it all

Yup, I just lost all my exploration data while flying a hauler from my first 1K trip. That thing was a magnet for interdictions and with D-modules to reduce weight there was little chance of escaping unscathed. And on the fringes of the populated area there is always a ship waitin by the star.
Also don't navigate the Galaxy map while being close to a star, I closed the map and I was greeted by burnt debris of my ship flying around. Next exploration trip I am taking my Cobra.

o, haha, i've almost lost my ship like that sad time my friend

so is it suicidal to go without shields considering the amount of pirates out there?

No, not really. Activity will stop at a given distance from civilization. Shields do not protect you against heat when scooping to close to a star, so shields can be useless then. But if you want to fly around in asteroid fields, well, just be careful.

If it was easy, it wouldn't be a challenge and wouldn't be any fun.

It's definitely a good idea to have practice at avoiding interdiction - check and see if the interdictor appears competent and if they are, submit and boost like hell while you align your jump out of there. I usually just jump to anyplace.

Having tried this successfully in the 1.2 beta in my rickety Cobra, for me the best policy for the pirate occupied areas beyond the most remote stations is to plot a decent course of about 500 to 800 LY and just jump, scoop when you can, and jump to your next system. Don't stop to scan the roses: just flee. (Save those systems for the armed explorer wings who can fight back in greater numbers. ;))

One thing I might try next time is plotting an economical route through the pirate lands, the aim being that if my route is efficient enough according to the galaxy map (no dotted lines at my destination) then I can jump and jump again without ever having to scoop fuel during this time and be exposed to nearby criminals or heat damage. Economy route plotting uses up far less fuel between any two given points than fast route plotting, but of course your journey will take longer. (That strategy could change much later if misjumps appear in the game. ;))

Nonsense. The challenge of exploration is surviving long journeys without running out of hull integrity, running out of fuel, etc. People don't set out on exploration trips so they can enjoy running away from NPCs, you can do that just fine anywhere in inhabited space. NPC interdictions don't even happen in 99% of exploration gameplay, and losing that last 1% would not make it one less enjoyable in the slightest.
