If you have Freezes in Elite Dangerous (Lags, Stuttering) > Problem Solving

Hi all.

Recently faced with such a problem. But I found the culprit and solved this problem, I will try to tell short and to the point.
It will be good if I help someone. Maybe it will be useful to developers for future patches.

Computer characteristics have nothing to do with the problem. The problem persisted on Windows 10 and after upgrading to Windows 11. Tested many other games, no problems in them.

Symptoms:
You play, everything is normal and suddenly everything freezes (control too) for half a second, I had this happen always 2-3 times almost in a row, with a small interval. Then everything works well and smoothly, in my case, I clocked with a stopwatch 2 minutes 20 seconds and again two or three friezes. Then all is good again for 2 minutes and 20 seconds and everything repeats.

Problem:
From the router I have an ethernet wire going to the hub, from the hub one ethernet wire goes to the TV, the other to the computer. Only when I am in the game, the computer constantly connects and disconnects from the TV. And at these moments there is freezing.

Solution:
I first just disconnected the TV from the hub, that helped. But then I plugged the TV into the hub, but removed the device from windows (see video).
I don't see any more freezes. If anything changes I will post here.

Here's what it looks like for me and how I solved the problem:

Can increase search range of reason of lags if this article didn't help fully. Catch freezes and open your Device Manager in Windows. Perhaps, it is refreshing each time as game freezes. Inspect what exactly appears/disappears/breaks down (yellow triangle appears on icon) etc.
In my case it was printer that had weak USB connection to PC. I turned off printer and lags gone. Watch your devices if you have same issue.

Well done finding your lag!

(Now I hope you do have a switch.. And not a hub...!)

Here are some ancient gifs as a reward:

Use Ethernet from Router to PC - that is a switched port (and fastest) and use the hub for all other devices.
And don't use wifi for gaming - that acts similar to hub (it shares Broadband between all devices (6 devices = bandwidth/6), but switch ports get dedicated Broadband/bandwidth speed).

Yeah l got 2 routers. One is sky the other BT.
Ones straight to my pc via ethernet cable.
The other goes straight to hers via ethernet cable.
Hers also acts as the wireless hub for the house devices ie phones, TV, etc.
Works perfectly.

Er.. no hub

Omg!
She swapped things!
She made my isp the home wireless thing for TV, phones etc !
Must admit I never even noticed. Grrrr
So l swapped em all back through hers. We argued I won!
Things are as they should be.

Edit: the stutter/freezes came back after a bit, so this actually didnt fix it. but i did find the fix eventually and wanted to confirm it before posting anything else.

Thanks for the post.
I've been having same kind of stutter, but no tv being online :p
Instead what fixed it for me was to remove wireless keyboard dongle (corsair) which was just plugged in to keep it safe :D keyboard itself has always been plugged with cable.
Would have not realised to check any network/comms device without your post.

yes.. Fdev works in mysterious way... trouble shooting Elite is similar to witchcraft... now, any fixes for antialiasing? :D

Ok, so here's a thing...
As edited in previous post, i finally found the fix to remove freezes from myself...

Go to UEFI/BIOS and disable TPM (or fTPM).
No idea why Elite is so sensitive with it, but after that, not a single freeze/stutter (other than the ones everyone has).
So far I had no issues with anything else, while on windows 11, even tho its said that win11 shouldnt work if its disabled.
To see if you have it enabled on win 10/11, win + R and type tpm.msc to see if its active and what version you have.
Hopefully this helps

Absolute saviour, i'd been polling from 60-19 fps on repeat, I cleared tcm as no option in bios, all is currently good
