If you intend to colonize a system - why? And which aspect of a colonized system most interests you?

I'm trying to figure out if there is something that would appeal to me about colonizing a system, so I'm curious what aspects of it appeal to other people

For example, I often do mining, so it might make sense to find a system with nice mining sites and colonize it, but I already have systems with nice mining sites that feature large-population space-stations giving great outfitting options, so I'm guessing I probably couldn't build a system as good for mining as I already have

So... what things are you looking for in a system to colonize, and what things do you hope to do with it?

I plan to colonize one quiet system with ELW, and make that planet consists almost entirely of subtropical coastline, where it is nearly always Saturday afternoon just before the beach bars close.

There are actually a couple of unpopulated anarchy systems in the bubble with ELW's so you won't have to go far.

I engage with evey game loop, and never focus on a single one for too long, so I'll try it once to see if I enjoy it, and then possibly add it to my (random) rotation.

The one idea I have, however, is to colonize a system with just a brown dwarf and no planets (if that's possible), to have a solitary station, perhaps running a black market, or just keep my FC parked there as a home system during my stops in the Bubble.

Definitely a visionary with great ideas 🤔

During my first trip to Sag A back in, I don't know, 2015-2017, I took note of my undiscovered first Earth-like, first set of undiscovered terraformable worlds, first ammonia world, first ringed water world, and so on - and then I kept a list of all undiscovered Earth-likes as well.

Soon as the Mandalay is available for credits, my plan is to go back out there and explore the "bubble" of systems visible in the left-hand panel while in those systems, around each of those systems, and just put my CMDR's name on 1 thing in each of those systems, leaving the rest of the guest books to be filled out by whomever comes across it later. (I've never been a fan of the "mark absolutely everything" style of exploring, but it is what it is and the galaxy is a big place.)

I've always thought it would be cool to go and make a few explorer's outposts, strung along some of those Earth-likes I found during that journey, just a place to repair/refuel, hand in data, and rejuvenate, for other players making their first trek along that corridor.

Of course, with the additions of player carriers, players going into efforts like the DSSA, and Fdev dropping their own outposts sprinkled around the galaxy at places like Explorer's Reach, the point has become somewhat muted over the years, but again, it's a big galaxy.

I don't really care about faction-ownership of a system or involving powerplay whatsoever. Managing a station or planetary port in a build-a-base fashion would be neat, and that's about as far as I'd like to take things.

One aspect yet not discussed is colonising an unpopulated system near my home system. Thus not upsetting any local player factions we might inadvertently expand into, which has happened a few times. So it's a method of a tight group of systems that won't (yet) have any local politics regarding pmfs to take into account.
But the limited 10ly range thing is going to prove difficult.
Now if it was 20ly mmmm yeah we could work with that.
Customised mining economy if there's decent hotspots seems like a good start.
For smaller player groups colonisation could be a boon. But that's yet to be seen.
The hauling needed to get it up and running might well prove too much for soloists. But again that remains to be seen. We've not long to wait.

The range is one of the biggest problems I have with the trailblazers update. As propably every real Explorer (drinks) I found one or the other El Dorado system with a terraformable or earth like world, maybe even more than one. If that range of 10 ly would not be, I would propably go out and colonize one of those systems. But as it appears this is Impossible. So why should I extend the bubble? Makes no sense for me.

Since I really have no idea what colonization (yes I use a z as a Yank) entails I'm on the fence whether I do it or not. In fact the 10LY limitation is a huge turn off for it.
I don't really want to be in the bubble and the idea of colonizing is not to camp in your own back yard. It really hinders the intrepid explorer. Besides I'm not overly keen on a space station, I'd rather have a ground base since I play Odyssey.

I found a system with two ELW's back in '19. Only problem is that it's 10Kly from the bubble so it will probably be a while before colonization can reach that far. I found a closer one, "only" 5Kly that I've been back to recently.

That's basically what I've been doing for the last couple of weeks. Going to my pet ELW and exploring all the nearby systems. I used my Cobra Mk V, even though it only has a 51 ly jump range. When the Mandalay releases, I'll buy one and give it a spin.

I believe that will be possible from what I have seen!

I will be picking an empty system more or less at random to begin with, purely in order to familiarise myself with the mechanics involved. Once I am satisfied that I know what I'm doing, then I will start shopping around the edges of the bubble for an interesting-looking empty system. If we're going to be System Architects, then it makes sense to me for my first attempt to be a complete "first draft" made while I'm getting used to whatever tools will be made available to us.
