Fiction If you may recommend just one book...

which one is the best to get a good narrative background story on ED? There's quite some fiction available and they all look equally good. However, since I will have put more time in playing ED, I'm looking at the one recommended book that gets me into the ED universe... :D

I have read several ED books now. I would highly recommend Drew Wagar's Elite Dangerous: Reclamation. It is one of the best.
I also liked Gavin Deas' Elite Wanted very much.

These two books have the right gritty atmosphere, good characters, good plot.

Thanks for your replies! I just bought Elite Reclamation, as well as the Tales from the Frontier (to have some shorter stories to read when there is less time). Looking forward to reading these!

Cool. I hope you like them.
I have the anthology too, but have not read it yet.
I heard it is good.

I've read all the ED titles that were published by Fantastic books publishing and you know what, they are all to such a high standard i couldn't pick one out of the bunch to label 'the best'

my advice? read them all - you'll be glad you did ;)

Yes, I agree and if you still have some spare cash, support the Elite Archive book on kickstarter. That should give you plenty of background info.

I really enjoyed Mostly Harmless and Tales from the Frontier. I kinda bounced off of Lave Revolution a couple of weeks ago, but I'll give it another go later on when I'm more in the mood for it

Hi faethon

What kind of stories do you like? Each of the novels offer you something a little different, in fact all the books are very different, the only common thread being that they are Elite books.

Action/Adventure?

Spies and Cloak and Dagger?

Politics?

Comedy?

Reclamation I thought was really very good.
I am just finishing Mostly Harmless. It is decent, but I'm not as gripped as Reclamation.
I am also trying to way up which book to read next.

"Tales from the Frontier" would be my recommendation. It's like a selection box of the sweetest stories, and once you've digested one story you'll feel like starting on another.

Edit: I've not ready any of the Gollancz books

As John says, it very much depends on what you enjoy reading. The beauty of the fiction that has been produced thus far is that it spans a nujmber of "styles" while being based in the ED universe.

I've read all of the books currently available and enjoyed them all - a story-per-night of the Anthology could well be an excellent starting point.

I've held off posting on this for some time until SFBook completed their set of reviews - https://sfbook.com/

Six of the Elite books are reviewed by Ant (owner of SFBook) on the website. That's the most comprehensive comparison I think you'll find out there. Yes, I also review for the website, but Any makes his own mind up about what he thinks of the books he reads and writes about. As you can see, he gets through a lot of Science Fiction.

Here's the Elite list: - https://sfbook.com/elite-series.htm
